Why Pool is devastated by the new Smoking Laws.

Nope. Smokers don't sit around in the lobby after their lobby group meetings and discuss ways to piss off non-smokers. Non-smokers however go out of their way to shove their opinions down everyone's throat though. Right or wrong doesn't matter, only their views.

It is cute when they cough and you haven't struck your lighter yet.

As strange and inconceivable as it may be, smokers agree it's nasty and willingly smoke outside. It's a welcome break. With black-tinted glasses where the world is against you all the time, I suppose the negativitists think it's not possible. But that's ok, cough away Merill. Cough away. Life must be a struggle when you fight every day.

Addiction is a powerful thing. It can trick the mind into believing almost anything.

Yes smokers willingly go outside to smoke but maybe if they had been so courteous beforehand drastic measure would not have been needed?

Smokers aren't in-courteous. I know I'm bursting the conspiracy bubble here, but as a smoker, I really don't put a whole lot of thought into making everyone else's life miserable. Second hand smoke, hell, first-hand smoke is nasty. I hate it myself. It's not a mystery. Do I need people to walk up to me out of the blue and tell me it's bad for me? No. I don't walk up to them and remind them being an ass is bad for your health too. I've been tempted though.

My point is that the anti-smoking crowd makes me want to go out less, not standing outside in -40c weather, just the same as the blaring music is not an enticement. I understand why both things are there, one for everyone's health, the other for business.

You won't find me disagree that smoking is unattractive or unhealthy. You also won't catch me giggling in a corner telling people I'm going to make your clothes stink on purpose. And yet, that was implied a few posts ago. That crap makes me tilt. Some people need to wake up and smell what they shovel.

I know what u mean bro. I was in the bar last night with my gas powered genset running so i could charge my ipad. People we're aholes about trying to get to shut it off. So it was a little loud and fumey. Nothing but complainers. Heck i even offered to charge their phones and the still whined. It got better once everybody left.

Our favorite pool hall just went non smoking on July 10th. Because gross food sales were higher than their liquor sales. We both (hubs and I) smoke and we were both pleased with the change. So what? if we have to go outside. It's a bit of a drag during matches for league and I'll admit that much but, even so it's not enough to stop us or any of our smoking friends to stop attending the pool hall. There are others in town, we don't like them (they are still smoker friendly). But the reason we don't like them is they suck! The balls are chipped. The food is horrid, the soda tastes NASTY, The tables are stained, the floor is so dirty that we feel our shoes sticking to the carpet everywhere. The service is lousy, the smoke is too thick and they charge way too much.

And this is why we still attend our favorite Non-smoking pool hall. The food is awesome, they also have darts, poker, shot games, trivia, basketball machines and Foosball, TV's everywhere, 3 bars and a dance club. The service is friendly and they work to keep it safe for everyone. We've been going there for the last 15 years, and I can't see a reason to go elsewhere.

Loren

If that were true, there would be no need for anti-smoking legislation.

I am a smoker and Colorado is a "smoke free" state. I have to go out side to smoke at work and the pool room. I like it. It has drastically cut down on the amount of cigarettes I smoke each day. I also do not smoke inside my home.

This is just one example Paul. And perhaps his client base is largely made up of the heavy smoking type. In which case it would make sense to see his business fall off. But those folks will soon be dead anyway. So if pool can only exist because of the lure of smoking it's doomed for failure anyway. But I don't think this is the case. No matter what times are changing and as we move forward more and more people are concerned about their health. You don't see too many people who have smoked for 40 years. They are usually dead. Just like you don't see too many 70 year old obese people.

This is what has surprised me. The non-smokers would have you believe that they want to be around pool without smoke. That is only partially true. They primarily want to be around smokers and have them not smoke.

When NY started out with an interim comprimise for their ban, a poolroom had to divide their room and make a non-smoking area with perminent walls and seperate ventilation. The non-smoking areas were empty. All the non-smokers were in the smoking area. What a waste.

Now ten years later, the whole place must be non-smoking and the whole place is empty. (I am thinking of one room in particular. This guy is a 30 year man in the business. After 20 years of increase, he points to an exact date his revenues went into decline. This could just be anecdotal.)

And what's the name of this pool hall?

And here in Tennessee we have a pretty good smoking law, it allows the owner to decide if he wants smoking or under 21 business and the nest business just opened a new room last year and is doing real well. In fact, the owner just bought a new Porsche. But the bottom line is the business owners are the ones who are putting their life savings on the line and they are the ones who should decide how their businesses are run. If you don't like the smoke then go somewhere else like Double Hill Billiards they are smoke free but sucking hind tit to the Chattanooga Billiard Club. I get so tired of these left wing liberal do gooders wanting the whole world their way. Just let the business owners decide how they want run their businesses and if you don't like it go elsewhere and if their business falls off they will come around.

For heaves sake, I've said this before.....

If I"m polite enough to walk the 30 feet to take a dump so as not to disrupt the pool playing experience of the customers around me by not doing it in a pail next to the table, a smoker can walk 30 feet in the other direction and smoke to his delight outside the front door.

The above post has little to do with smoking. This fellow believes he is considerate and knows what manners are. I don’t like analogies and I certainly don’t like his but here goes mine anyway:

I recognize this kind of thinking. I know a bar where rock bands have been playing loud music for decades. It’s part of their business. The owner allows the music to be played at ear-drum-shattering decibels. The customers like it and wouldn’t have it any other way. In comes Chicago RJ. The music hurts his ears. Not only that, he doesn’t like hard rock. He insists that the amplifiers be turned down and further more, that the band play music more to his liking. With all due respect, who is ignorant here?

OH MY GOD!

Are we still talking about smoking in pool rooms?????

Get over it. Smoking in pool rooms is 20th century action, this is the 21st century please let's move on! Change is the only constant, if you seek no change, you're half dead already!

All I know, is the most successful pool rooms in this part of the country are smoker friendly and in fct have a cigar shop connected to them. They're doing well enough the owner just bought a new Porsche.

I have smoked for over 40 years and I'm still here. I also never cough and have been told by doctors that my lungs look as though I have never smoked. When the media turned anti-smoking the masses got on the banwagon just as they do about anything the media/hollyweird promotes. People now put smokers on the same level as child molesters. You have very ignorant people who would like to see the government make all places no smoking, and many would like to see smoking a felony! When some of these same people complain about the government taking away their liberties, I have to giggle a little.

I don't go back to tournaments that are no smoking. I also don't hang out at local places that are no smoking. I'm also one of those few pool players that can spend a few hundred in a place a night. All the pool spots around me that are full are all smoker friendly!

I've been urinating for my entire life without ill effects but it wouldn't occur for me to do it in a public place.

Also, I can't understand why it's such a big deal for a smoker to walk 20 steps to smoke outside. I routinely walk that far when nature calls.

If change is so good how come people just 10 years ago had it much better than people do now, or will for the next 10 years anyway? Change is not always a good thing!
