Why the different color of 4/12 balls for tv?

I see the commentators frequently confused as to whether the 4/12 are the 5/13. I don't see where they gain anything by changing the colors.

colors

the same reason as the change to sky blue cloth,
contrast/ definition.

Next the 6/14 are neon green, the 5/13 are hunter orange
and the 1/9 are also neon. :(

Roughly, the human eye already sees certain colors like the beginning of the spectrum (reds) and the end (violet/purples/pinks) better than the colors in the middle. On top of that (or maybe related to that) red on monitors and TVs will bleed and appear to glow brighter than other colors, look closely the next time you see someone wearing pure red on TV and you might notice their clothes seem to glow and you can more easily spot little jaggy artifacts in your cable broadcasts around the red.

Maybe the commentators weren't used to it, but it's much easier on the eyes, there's tons of contrast between the balls and felt without it being obnoxious.

We use television balls on a few tables at Amsterdam Billiards and as a player, there is zero difference. In my opinion, it's something that should have been done a long time ago.

FYI, the 7/15 are both light brown, as well.

TV balls are for, you may have guessed, TV.

I have a tape of Rempe and Bustamonte at the US open.

As the commentators (Grady being one, doing a great job) the balls from a regular ball set, the two, four, and seven balls are ALL indistinguishable from one another.

Anything is better than those marbelized Elephant Beautiful Balls... when a taping would be broadcast using those, I would turn the channel in disgust. They may have been "beautiful" live and in person, but on TV the balls all looked the same to me and I couldn't stand to watch it.

a buddy of mine bought elephant balls and brings 'em in to play instead of using the house centennials. I hate 'em. It's STILL not immediately clear which ball I'm looking at, there's that half second delay identifying the ball. Plus in real life they don't get any prettier. There are a lot of nice effects they could have gotten with pool balls but seems like not many people are willing to experiment. I like the idea of reflective (think christmas ornaments) and iridescent and transparent ones, if that's possible.
