So, my buddy who lives and works in the forest asks me if I want a piece of wild cherry burl.
Of course I said yes, and 2 days later this is what he brought me.
He also said he was bringing me a hard maple burl, but it was bigger and he wasn't sure if he could fit it in the trunk of his Buick.

Burls

I will be more than happy to share, if it is as nice as I am hoping.
Iwill first need to figure out how I am going to get into squares without a lot of waste.
My buddy just called, and he said he is on the way with the huge hard maple burl. I will post some pics later today.
Sometimes it's just great living in Wisconsin.

If you have never processed cherry burl before, shoot me a PM and I can help you with some info. Its very touchy when processing it, because it will crack, and warp in a very short time (what seems like hours). Tremendous amount of waste.

Smells great tho while you're cutting it.........

There are products out there made to displace water trapped in wood which should stabilize the burl. I found a recipe that used 1 part plexiglas chips to 3 parts acetone. Let the plexiglas dissolve and add wood. Just soak for a few months.

Rudie,
I sent you step by step instructions with pictures on how to process those burls. If you have questions just let me know. -Larry

Larry, I wonder how many people realize the dobie in your avatar is grinning at them being happy and glad to see them. It's a trait in just some of the breed.

Burl advice
