Will Filler be the game's next Superstar?

According to Ralf Souquet in his interview today after the completion of the match, Mosconi Cup MVP Joshua Filler is in a league of his own in regards to his natural ability and his skill level, particularly considering his young age. Question is, do you guys think he'll be the next Earl Strickland / Efren Reyes level superstar of our sport?

Many here have commented in the various Mosconi Cup related threads that the Europeans would be afraid to match up against our players in big money long race sets or ahead sets. Does anyone here really think Filler would be afraid of matching up against our top young players such as Thorpe or Bergman?

His fellow European players and I'm sure many potential American stakehorses would line up for an opportunity to stake this young man against any of our top players in any race, 9-ball or 10-ball. And I'm not sure you'd find many out there willing to stake our top players against him right now, unless they get some weight, and he's only likely to get even better as he gets more experience.

Lol!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hmmm...I notice you didn't put Shane's name in that line-up....:scratchhead:
...you know, the guy who is all washed up and can't beat a living human...
...in team play.....but manages to be number one FargoRated player.

yes him and Kaci

neither are near Shaw at the moment though

too many players, too much can happen, everyone thought Wu was gonna be the guy a decade ago

a kid can pick up a cue today and get world class in a few years, just like Wu, its not even inconceivable to me that a kid can watch Filler, say "i wanna be like him", and be better than him in 5 years

internet has eased the learning curve for everything, examples abound of guys who took up a game from nothing and became world champs in half a decade, everything from poker to combat sports has seen this

Earl slayed monsters at 20 pre internet and ruled as world champ post internet, same with Efren

nobody in the game is anywhere close to their greatness

Are you referring to my not mentioning Shane as a superstar in the class of Strickland or Reyes, or not mentioning him along with Bergman and Thorpe as our top money players? Although Shane has matched Earl's 5 US Open wins, his longevity span between his first and last one (9 years) does not quite compare to Earl's 17 years, to be able to put him in that class just yet. As far as Filler vs Shane in a money match, I'd love to see it, but I might still give the kid a slight edge in a long session.

The YOUNG kid can't overcome the OLD kids huge break advantage playing a "tar" type race to 100 match, however, the YOUNG kids timing when shooting through the cue ball is as good as it gets and the sky is the limit with regards to his potential

it'll be fun to watch him and the tall 18 yr old ( cough, cough) young man going forward

It was Shane in a money match of 9 or 10-ball that I was referring to...
...I would think Shane would be at the top of the list for a money match.

I'll unload on this, my friend. Kid has zero chance against Shane in a race to 100. You talked about fundamentals. Fundamentals are an absolute advantage in short race, alternating breaks. But in the long races, the feel players like Shane absolutely dominate because their feel game when it's peaked is miles above the mechanical, fundament players.

If someone wants to stake Filler, you all can can bust me and a hundred other gamblers on this site. To not understand this difference is to not understand the basic difference in skill set requirements.

And I'm not woofing. But if someone says Filler is a long distance runner against Shane , I'm in action with you.

Flavors, Fickle minds, Short memories

LOL, another new flavor thread
We see a new thread touting an upcoming player as next big thing etc whenever he wins some big event.
Wasn't it recently that people were saying Kaci is gift to pool? Before that is past few years we had many young kids mentioned as next superstar like Ignacio, Aloysius Yapp, Anton Raga , Fedor Gorst to name a few..
Of cos, Filler is a great player. Excellent straight potter easily top 5 best potter in world. But lacking in counter safety/safety, not amongst the best in the break and CB departments.
It is still too early to tell. So far, he has done well this year - winning China Open and MVP at MC. Forget about races to 1000. Just look at big tournament performances and he still has a lot to prove in big tournaments. Not just in 1 year but he has to consistently perform and be amongst favories to win big tournaments in for next 5 to 10 years
Let us see how he performs in World 9 ball championship that starts tomorrow 9 Dec in Doha. If he can get into quarterfinals, I would consider that a big achievement for him. I may be wrong but my guess is he has less than 50% chance of getting into quarterfinals. Just too many good players who play at his level or better :D

he certainly has the talent, Emotional Maturity? He has too grow up. A lot.

but as US820 says, time will tell

too bad he acted like a 3 year old that was given his first lolipop.

To be fair in pool terms thats exactly what happened!

Its also worth pointing out in the final game against Dennis he was much more subdued and made sure to shake hands before celebrating.

If he mentally holds up after the next 5 years, then yes. Only weakness I see in his game is the guy in the mirror. If I was his dad, I'd immediately get em to a sports psychologist, he has all the physical tools, he doesn't have that feeling of an Efren mindset at all. He's still a kid & Married.
