Found this book in my grandfathers basement. It is great condition and the diagrams and pictures are really crisp. What is the worth of this book? Seems like some great straight pool info is in here.

Holy sh** dude that book is probly worth like $500:eek::eek:
Just kidding, I don't know, but I have a similar book called "Winning Pocket Billiards" by Masconi, I payed like 10 bucks for it new. There not that hard to come by, I have never seen that one though, it may be worth a bit more if its out of print. You should google it.

Amazon has them used for as low as $40. hmm. I will read it it at least.

It would really depend on what printing it was and that can't be determined by the copyright date. First printings might be worth a few bucks but I'd never count on getting much in the current economy. I'll look at my copy later and see what printing mine is and let you know how it's determined. On my way out to house sit for the kid this AM.

Not that this comment helps the thread, but a friend gave me an autographed copy about a year ago. Not sure what that does to the value, but its a treasure to this Mosconi fan.

According to wikipedia, the first printing was by Crown Publishing in 1948. This is the book I have. It's too bad the binding is just about shot, a page started to come out while I was thumbing through it last night.

Is that the little red book? I had one in 1964. Mom may have it stuck away in the closet, along with my electric train. Dad won't let me have that yet.

beerpressure...With the binding shot, as you described it, the book is worth little. I have a '48 copy that is signed by Mosconi, and it is in near perfect condition. It's worth maybe $50-$60. The info in the book is mostly wrong. The fundamental stuff is only good for somebody Mosconi's size (he was 5'3"), and the shots shown in the book, don't line up that way in real life. It's mostly kept for sentimental reasons, like Mosconiac described.

As low as $6.95 on Amazon. The $40 has a different cover.

The $40-$99 version

Winning Pocket Billiards can be had as low as 1 penny, plus $2.98 shipping and handling.

If someone could explain the difference in price in the first two, and why Winning Pocket Billiards is so cheap in comparison.

That's correct. My copy says "Thirty-third Printing, June, 1979". My guess is that any thing after the first printing would state so, as mine does. A lot of people, antique dealers in particular, don't know how to determine edition/printing.
I've been in the used/rare book business in a very modest way, for over 40 years now.

Figures...the one I bought years ago is the least valuable one. :sorry:

Oh well, I did buy a Palmer model M from the 2nd catalog about the same time I bought the book...
