this is going to be the most incredible match we all have seen in many, many years! wimpy, was the ronald reagan of tournament pool, meaning, as he got older, he was very ill, with every type of serious stomach problem a man can have, he would enter a tournament, and complain, he may have to be taken to the hospital. everyone would think "this is it, this man is dieing" he looked like he might keel over any minute. and yet, when he played, he was virtually unbeatable! something deep down inside, maybe it was his "pure love" for the game, made him not only carry on, but carry on very strong, and win almost everything he ever entered. sort of like when reagan got shot, and everything else, was wrong with the guy, he was like godzilla, just when you thought he was a goner, he would say from his hospital room "i'm alright, i just got shot, that's all" then you have wimpy's opponent cowboy, the cowboy, in my opinion was the "ultimate" for those of you, who never seen the cowboy shoot, look out! this man, started the "cool way" of shooting, he was the first bustamante, if you will. the cowboy was ultra cool, he pranced and danced around the table, like a cat on the prowl, he had rythme, and coolness, that couldn't be touched! he invented the slip/slide/stroke, and was responsible for thousands to take up pool, because he resembled a professional ice skater skateing backwards, he made it look easy ,breezy and enjoyable, like he was having all the fun in the world. yes, the cowboy was the coolest of e'm all. and believe it or not, he never won a tournament in his life! as far as coming in 2nd? he probaly did that more than any other pool player that ever lived! he has got to be the single greatest player that ever lived, that never won a tournament. this classic match up of wimpy vs the cowboy can be enjoyed on espn2 april 26th, enjoy, i know i will, i KNOW i will.

OMG! Someone please tape the whole thing and put it on DC++ if you are able. I have always wanted to see Lassiter shoot and always figured no real footage remained, but this is awesome! I am in frickin Australia and don't even have cable, let alone ESPN2. I really hope afew people can tape it and share it via DC++ if they have the technology to make it into a AVI or some other computer format.

Wow, that is awesome. If someone tapes those I would pay for a copy for sure. Don't care about the trick shot stuff, just want the old timers matches.

Bert Kinister sells the complete series of these (quality ok, but not as good as Accustats).

You can buy the whole series on VHS or DVD off of EBay from a guy called "tenfftall". I am glad I bought the tapes. You can see Wimpy, Willie Mosconi, Cowboy Jimmy Moore (what a slip-stroke!) Irving Crane, UJ Puckett and Babe Cranfield. They play mostly 7-ball and 9-ball and there are a few games of 8-ball throughout. Unfortunatley, they are all older and way past their prime but it is still good to see the "old" style of pool. It's nothing like today's style of play with the player hunched way down, chin touching his cue, elbow jacked way up in the air...jerky, fast strokes. The older players were just so smooooth and natural. I'm sure you'll like it.

Oh, I forgot to mention one problem with these tapes. Two of the years they had the "Legendary Stars of Pocket Billiards" series, ESPN had them play in Atlantic City on a table that was not level (one year slightly off, the other year, the ball would drift a foot down the length of the table). You will be very entertained by the totally inane questions and commentary by a young Chris Berman. Allen Hopkins is also uniquely stiff and uninformative. Also please remember Willie Mosconi had had a major stroke in the 1950's, and had big problems controlling fine motor function (though Mosconi after a major stroke is still better than you in your dreams).
