I can't speak for pros but on the point of 'if they won't bet on themselves...' I had an interesting conversation with a pro. He said he regularly has people willing to back him to play person x. In that environment it just didn't make sense for him to play on his own money. Of course maybe that is just what tell naive people like me hoping to find another backer
