Wolford Wrong Cueing Against Alcaide @ 4-4 Mosconi Cup

He got unlucky on the scratch. I think that if you made that object ball 100 times in that position with the spin he used, the scratch would be less than ten of a hundred.

He could have added side spin to the shot, but that would have increased the difficulty as pointed out above.

This is one of those shots that would be nice to try during an AZB get-together where different members could try their different ideas.

A high rolling slightly inside cueing is a very often used execution manner by top pros for long distance, and in close shots, to change the cue ball angle coming of the object ball.
The release ''feel'' (I call it unwinding) of the cue ball (is a developed ''feel'' top players get, identical to when draw comes off the cue ball).
This feel when the cue ball beings its ''natural roll'' creates cue ball movement that redirects slightly outward.
Also, and extremely important, there is NO object ball rotation when shot this way.... because, it ''clips'' the object ball when the collision occurrs, whereas outside cueing when striking that ball often puts rotation on that object ball making it easy to dbl the pocket and ''hang up''.

I don't think your description of the imparted spin on the OB is correct. If the inside or outside spin comes off the CB before it hits the OB, then as far as the OB is concerned you hit the CB with center ball. In either case, as far as I can tell the CB will "clip" the OB and impart the same spin on the OB. In the case of Wolford's thin cut shot, that would be slight counter-clockwise spin on the OB. You seem to be saying that the CB will hit the OB at a different angle if you hit the CB with inside spin v. outside spin. At such a long distance, the angle would not vary much, so I don't think the imparted spin on the OB would vary much either.

Now, if the CB were still spinning with inside or outside spin when it hit the OB, then the throw effects would be different. In the case of inside spin, even though the CIT and SIT are working in the same direction (towards the end rail), there actually would be less throw because the relative surface speeds of the balls at contact would be faster and therefore would grab less. Slowing down the relative speeds of the surfaces with outside spin would result in more grab and more throw--even though the CIT and SIT are working in opposite directions with outside spin. It's a strange paradox that Dr. Dave has described for thin cuts.

Yup. With that thin a cut, he would have need great, steaming piles of outside to cancel the CIT. Possible but not useful on that shot. Here is the shot in case the YouTube goes away.

The scratch was to the lower left pocket by the 9 ball. Here you can see that he overcut the six a little and put it in the thin side of the pocket. If he had hit the center of the pocket, he would not have scratched.

When I saw the shot, the green ball was allot closer to the cushion. Where bob can I see this video bite again? I looked for it.

It's through a link earlier in this thread. The link took me straight to the correct time. Post #9 in this thread.

Now that I looked at it (from a completely different camera angle) this Overhead camera shot, he used the wrong cueing.

When I watched it live, the camera angle was behind the player near level with the play surface, making the ball appear Very close to the head rail.
So my touch of inside thinking came into play.

But seeing it a second time, with this Overhead Camera Angle, I now realize how far the 6 is from the head rail it's not a thin cut.

Because of the overcut he scratched.

With this distance, trying to control the cue ball/Cut as it changed from a draw kill shot, then spin releasing is not that easy, too many variables, he should of simplified the shot.

Just cut it in with a 12 o'clock high rolling cue ball,
YOU have MUCH better control of hitting his target ball Fat (middle of pocket) then come two outta the corner like he'd planned.

We all know, that a high rolling cue ball with center is the easiest shot of all to control.
