Women in the US Open

I'm not opposed. It actually will pose some very interesting matchups.

This isn't an apples to apples comparison but.....The Professional Bowlers Association opened up the criteria for invitations to their Tournament of Champions this year. The tournament invites past champions only, and this year a handful of women pro's were invited for their championships on the ladies tour. (which doesn't exist anymore) Kelly Kulick a top women's pro not only qualified for the step ladder final....but she beat Chris Barnes in the championship match.

I think its win/win for the US Open. The ladies will be a sentimental favorite. This should draw even more interest. If a lady beats one of the top pro's its a great story. If all the ladies get destroyed....then it reflects just how great the men pro's are(which is pretty much a given anyway)

The common thread between bowling and pool is....their both dying. Its time to think outside the box. Pool needs an angle..a spark..anything to draw positive attention to this great sport. Hopefully this will help. Besides I love watching the top lady pro's......
 
I don't feel the same way many people do about men and women playing in the same league at this moment. The exceptions are the ones you put up pictures of on your blog, and a few others, namely Yu Ram Cha, who I think plays better than most of the girls. But she isn't up there. Waddup with that?

I'm for women competing in men's events. The ones who have dedicated their life to honing the skills necessary to be in the arena. A few of them. But not lets get carried away here. 10 women in a field of 200? Most if not all of them can string 3-5s. Their chances aren't good, dude.

So until there are more women at the calibur of cha, ga young, and jasmin, I wouldn't expect it to happen as you wish anytime soon.

I hope Cha gets pretty deep. I like her game. Ga young and Jasmin as well.

Though I don't think ladies have much hope of winning sadly...

Maybe if you had 50 woman players in the field of Ouschan/Fisher quality...maybe then one of them could succeed...maybe some day...but even then chances would be slim to none...

It is so hard...gotta beat likes of Ralf, Mika, Niels, Shane, Darren, Earl, Johnny...just too difficult...to win the US Open you have to take down guys like that...one by one...
 
I say it's about time the women were included in the U.S. Open.
I think all events that claim to be "open" should be open to anyone who chooses to put up their entry fee and compete.
 
I have a hunch that the women who plan on playing won't wait for the last minute to sign up and pay their entry fees. That being said maybe Barry or his daughter could post a list of who has signed up so far, or at least how many women have. Keeping first time for women in the press can only be good PR for the US Open. It wouldn't surprise me at all if it fills up this year (256 players) and the fan turnout is bigger than the last three years even with a poor economy. Johnnyt

Barry's daughter, Shannon, updated the list on 5/5/10 showing 89 players. The list includes all previous champs who have a free invite (surely not all will use the free entry). Looks like a couple more females so far (Gerda and a Cathy from Canada?). She's posted the list in the U. S. Open forum. Here's a link (hopefully it will work).

Im gonna throw on the flame suit real quick...that being said I dont have a problem with women playing in a mens event, I have a problem with men being excluded from womens events, in fairness and in equality sense why is it mens events should be open to women players but women's events men are not allowed to play? It seems a little hypocritical to me, again just my 2 cents but I personally believe if your going to open one gateway u had better open the other 1 too. At any rate the overall message sent by allowing women into mens event is great for the sport and that type of following is what pool needs, it needs more participation from every man woman or child, so hopefully it is a gateway to long term success.

This very issue has been debated in golf tournaments and even poker tournaments. Rather than get into all the reasons why women should be allowed to compete against the men and not vice versa, I will only say this. Sometimes in life we must just use our COMMON SENSE about what is the right thing to do. There isn't a rule or law that governs all situations. This is one of those situations that requires the use of common sense to figure out the right thing to do. Now sue me! :duck:
 
Since a lot of fans/players don't think there is any chance that they will cash high in the US Open what is the problem letting them play. Me thinks the cavemen just don't want to let go. Johnnyt

Same reason you wouldn't allow adults to play in junior tournaments. Certain tournaments are created to bring all the best players in the world together under one roof and battle it out for the title - Man or Woman. Other tournaments are created to bring a specific division of players together and give everyone in that division a chance to win - like the WPBA.

again just to keep the friendly discussion going and I greatly stress "FRIENDLY"...the womens us open held yearly would be along the same lines of a tournament that would bring the highest level of competition together to see who the best player is???? correct??? Now dont get me wrong you have tournament titled "The world pool masters" that is headed in the direction that everybody should be entitled to play. And when you say the same reason adults cant play in junior tournaments you sort of prove my point you are in a round about way in not so many words saying there is a significant skill difference...with out putting words in your mouth would that almost not be the same case as why men would not be allowed in a womens event??? My take is that if you are holding a mens and a womens us open in a calender year if you are going to allow women in the mens event its hypocritical for men to not have the same opportunity. Again I wanna state im not pointing fingers nor do I have ill feelings toward anyone this is purely my opinion of the situation. Also I do wanna add you will not hear me say a word about the US Open 10 ball event there is no womens division for that so absolutely they should have the same opportunities as any body else man woman or child.

Jay,

I 100% respect your view of this matter, as well as your name and opinion in the world of pool, however pertaining to this situation, when you are talking about a tournament like the us open which has a mens tournament and women tournament (not that i can think of when it is held throughout the year) is it not a tad on the hypocritical side to allow one gender into one tournament then exclude one from the other. Now if this was vise versa and men were allowed to play in the womens event but women were not allowed to play in the mens I would be on here preaching the exact same thing, this is an issue of equality 1 is not being treated the same as the other. Again I do completely support full participation by both genders in whatever tournament its great for the sport, but am I really the only one who has this view on the situation? In my honest opinion if women are allowed to play with men somebody please give me one good reason why men should not be allowed to play with women, I will retract my entire argument and humblely apologize.
