Wood choices

I'm interested in having a minimalist cue made using just one length of primo/highly figured wood for the entire butt, forearm, etc. - no inlays, maybe wrapped and with silver rings, maybe unwrapped, and with a phenolic joint.

I would like the finished cue, with shaft, to weigh between 18.7 and 18.85. and be of average butt circumference.........My question is - What would my choices of wood be ?......And since I need this cue to come out a little on the light side (approx. 18.8), does that mean that all of the heavier woods like ebony, cocobolo, tulipwood, rosewood, etc. would not be a possible choice for me ?

Thanks in advance for your advice, Ghost

My choise would be Bacote. A beautiful yellowish-brown wood with black grain. The lighter the color, the lighter the weight...JER

Any of the figured Maples<birdseye, fiddleback, quilted>even the
heavier, sugar maple, versions, you mighy have to add weight
to get it UP to 18 oz.

Any of the Tropical exotics<Ebony, Rosewood, etc> could be used
if you aren't opposed having the butt cored. Some, like Indian Rosewood
would not need to be cored to keep the weight to 18+ oz.

Big Leaf<Western> Maple, tho offering spectacular figure, I would
strongly recomend coring due to weight/strength/stability considerations.

Most "dramatically figured" wood will not be stable enough to stay straight in the length you are suggesting. Many cuemakers won't use pieces that long even of stable types of wood. If you decide on a wrap, it would be much easier, as you could use a stable wood for the handle underneath the wrap. If not, you could cut the wood into sections, core each section with a more stable wood, and rejoin them using silver or decorative rings at the joints. Just my $.02.
