Can anybody give me an idea what shape bit will cut or shave wood in power feed mode using a metal lathe, most of the metal cutting bits don't cut as well as my handheld wood lathe cutting gouge's. So i was wondering if you shape a bit some how to make wood shaving easier. By the way I don't have a router setup yet and I am going to make the butt slimmer on some real old brunswick house cues I am converting, any pictures or explanations will help and thanks in advance.---Leonard

Try using one that is round on top with relief on bottom, something like a gouge,i use this for small jobs, must be sharp

Like everything else, it's out there on Google somewhere. A
diagram would be worth 1000 of my words. You need a knife-shaped
edge to slice the wood like a plane. Metal cutting bits are designed
to cut 'chips' long sharp ribbons of hot metal is not what one
would want flying off a lathe.

looking end - on at the bit, it should be triangular in cross section
comming to a sharp edge. I have seen diagrams, but don't remember where. Try searching for "lathe bit wood cutting"

Thanks to all of you I wish I could safely mount one of my wood tools in place, it would sure beat the heck out of sanding. I'm going to try grinding a couple to look like my best cutting wood skews. Thanks again--Leonard

Len, why not just get a cheap trim router, hose clamp to a angle/square block and cut wood right?
I know one local maker whose son was cutting wood with a knife. The wood split and the thing went thru his arm.

Hey Joey can you show me a picture of what you are talking about with the router clamped on to lathe ? Thanks again Len----by the way thats what my wife calls me among other things.

I saw a place on ebay with those same type mounts. They look pretty solid for the price. Are'nt the Kress routers supposed to be alittle quiter? Seems Like I'm always reading or hearing about one needing brushes or rebuilt, but most routers would need the same eventually. I have heard good things otherwise about them though.

That looks like the real deal, where is good deals on Porter cable laminate trimmers and or routers. Thanks ---Leonard

Sounds like you are ready to go with a router which I think is a good idea. However I thought I would point out the basics. A piece of high speed steel will work decently if you shape it with an aggressive cutting angle and a wide enough cutting surface. I used a similar tool to make the final pass crowning custom rifle barrels when taking less than a thousandths off.

As others have mentioned, you want your tool to slice. The other thing is that you want the cutting edge to be slightly wider than your feed advance per revolution. You can go as wide as two to one but you are dulling a tool to little purpose then.

I keep a very smooth stone handy and sharpen the cutting tool before every job. It is already sharp so it doesn't take much effort to make it razor sharp.
