Does wood preservative really do anything for the cue shafts? And if yes but not to use on white maple shafts because of colorization, why use it at all?

We don't use any preservative but we do use a wood sealer which seals the wood and resists moisture. The shafts will remain stable in most climates barring any extraneous circumstances (leaving the cue in the car at 15 degrees or at 100 degrees). It does not change colors as other wood sealers nor does it oxidize. It performs well and serves our needs. It's more costly but you get what you pay for and amortized over 1,000 shafts, it's pennies per shaft for the added protection.

If you're looking to save money then use any wood sealer off the shelf such as Behrs, Sherwin Williams, Anchorseal (not really but some do), Minwax, etc. All these will color the wood and some severly over time.

Why seal it at all if it's going to color the wood? Do ou use a thinned out sealer to preserve after turns?

I can say it! :thumbup:

It's a term I am familiar with. It is an antimicrobial used in cosmetics, toilet paper and other such things. It causes irritation and potentially contact dermatitis.

I believe it is derived from turpentine and/or pine rosin.

I am unfamiliar with its use specifically as a wood preservative in applications such as are discussed here but I don't doubt it would be a component of some wood finish or preservative products.

Interestingly it was said that a sealer is not a preservative. Semantics perhaps?

Our product does not "color the wood". It stays clear and natural looking. Some use off the shelf wood sealers available in your local home improvement stores; those products, over time, usually "color the wood". You'll have to ask those who use commercial based wood sealers why they use it. My guess is because it's less expensive to use.

but, what does color have to do with the playability of a shaft, many of my customers want that darker honey color shaft.
btw i use super glue or maybe some hightower sealer.

Many players today want a white shaft and that is fine. If you use our sealer the shaft will remain white as our product doesn't yellow and is perfectly clear.

Some players want, what is called, conventional kiln dried wood which produces a more tan or off white colored shaft. If you use a wood sealer from Home Depot or Lowes on a white shaft, these will darken or yellow over time due to the sealer. There is a difference between a conventional dried shaft and a yellowed or amber shaft toned white shaft. Some use Bullseye Shellac and this will color a shaft.
