These two matches are very interesting, two 9 ball/rotation players v 8 ball specialists from the UK and Oz.

Which side is the tougher draw?

In Niel's website, he is complaining about the draw in the last 32. However, looking at this link l http://onthehill.up.seesaa.net/image/DSCF1727.jpg, I think his chances are equal if not better than the other players. In fact, he will be facing an unknown player (Mario Tolentino) in the last 32. Compare it to Ronato Alcano who will be matching up with Thorsten Hohmann, Lee Van Corteza with Van den Berg and Bustamante vs. Engert in the last 32.

What about Darren Appleton who has the misfortune of matching up with Souquet in the next round? If he is lucky enough to win over Souquet, there is a strong possibility he will be facing Dennis Orcullo next.
If he wins over Dennis, he may have to face the magician, Efren Reyes. If that is not enough, he may have to match up against Bustamante or Engert next.

In your opinion, which is the stronger side: (listing only what I consider to be the top 8 players in each group.)

Side A

Efren Reyes
Dennis Orcullo
Ralf Souquet
Francisco Bustamante
Thomas Engert
Marcus Chamat
S. Kawabata
Darren Appleton

or

Side B

Thorsten Hohmann
Ronnie Alcano
Lee Van Corteza
Niels Feijen
Nick Van den Berg
Hu Kai Hsia
Chia Ching Wu
Fabio Petroni

I think Appleton is a good bet for his last 32 as he definately rises to big occaisions and 8 ball is probably his best game

Well, good luck to him. I think he has the hardest route to the championship. If he manages to win over Souquet, Orcullo, Reyes and Bustamante (assuming the last 3 win their respective matches), then he will become my favourite to win the title.

If it was UK 8Ball, I'd go Ben Nunan, but on the tables and rules in use it should be Alcano.

Saw Ben play a couple of months ago, and he definately deserves his top 5ranking in UK 8ball.

how much money is at stake here? as everyone know pot money is a big motivation, especially for the Filipinos. 10 Filipinos in the last 32, 2 matches of all filipino, a possible 8 Filipinos in the last 16.

Hmm... very interesting...

my possible top 8 finisher in no particular order and considering the draw...
Francisco Bustamante
Joven Bustamante
Efren Reyes
Ralf Souquet
Lee Van Corteza
Wu Chia Ching
Hui Kai Hsia
Ronnie/Thorsten

the last entry is a toss up, whoever wins would possibly go straight to quarter or even semis, 2 most recent 9 ball champion facing each other, but this is 8 ball (man, i'm drooling for this match)

the match for the finals i'd like to see would be Efren against Wu.
Wu as the defending champion and Efren as the.... well do i still have to say things about the "Maestro"?

They're both super tough but I'd have to say that bracket A may be the tougher of the two.

Although I think Thorsten faces the tougher opponent in his next match (emphasis on "I think"), I like Efren and Thorsten from here.

A day off in the middle of a pool tournament? I've never heard of this happening before. Has anybody?

Many strong players here, in this event. Sad to say, but if there were two or three Americans here, they wouldn't have much of a chance. American pool is the weakest it's ever been right now. We have a handful of good players who are reluctant warriors at best. They pick and choose their spots very carefully. The only young player I see who is willing to get out there and mix it up with the best players is Shane V. B.

Where's Johnny, where's Rodney, where's Corey? Aren't these guys supposed to be professional pool players? Ralf, Thorsten, Mika and the filipinos seem to find their way to major events worldwide. I think the American players are discouraged, as there is currently ONE major tournament held in this country annually, with decent prize money.

When is the BCA going to jack up the purse on the enjoy.com Open in Vegas? Please make it a $200,000 event with each division having a 100K purse. It's about time! Professional pool in the United States is on it's death bed, and on life support.

I'm pleased you said that, I would have got bashed (as a non American) saying it.

I just don't get it, many people have used the travel excuse but EVERY other player has to travel there also (apart from the token local guys of course). I mean like it or not this is a sanctioned world title event, win this and you have the chance to get more sponsors on board and hence go to more events.

A few of the TOP Americans that have won quite a lot of prize money over the last couple of years, why don't they reinvest it in themselves?

I don't mean to criticize here, I just don't understand why in this particular instance?

Maybe the Americans are just avoiding another middle-east conflict ! :D

It's nice to be back posting again. I still have an annoying slow connection though, so my browsing capability here is still quite limited. gosh, dial-up is even faster compared to this. Now let's go to where my bet is on;

Though I like Efren's chances of winning this one, I chose that Joven guy for the betting odds!
