World Cup of Pool 2014(Portsmouth, UK) 23-28Sep (9ball Scotch Doubles) Winner $60K

Wow...Taipei can't get a roll. They need this rack badly. Qatar's safety play looks suspect...might let Taipei back in.

Taipei made 2 illegal breaks early and missed a pretty standard 1 rail kick before the 8th rack. Qatar looked strong running out, but after a safety exchange in the 8th, Taipei gets an open look and runs out. 5-3 Qatar up, Taipei breaking. Legal break, first one of the match.

This could get closer pretty quickly as long as CT keeps it lose.

The Taiwanese are showing their mettle, they will definitely not go down without a fight!

Good commentary with all the salient points. You should replace Nick Halling- he is quite a newbie with pool commentating LOL
Taiwan just get their act together with their first legal break and we have a dogfight and a nail biting finish coming up:D

Matchroom has it right! Races to seven produce great drama, as do the Mosconi Cup races to six. The pressure is high because every mistake may be the one that cost you a match. You need to play with consistent excellence to beat all comers in this format. In addition, the best pool from a viewer standpoint is pool with a shot clock.

I'll add that Turning Stone and the World Cup of Pool have combined to remind me why I like nine ball over ten ball.

Thanks, Matchroom, for understanding what makes pool events exciting for viewers.

Qatar up 5-2 after a fluked in 4 ball...Taipei stewing in their chairs.

All this makes pool exciting to watch. It's tough on the players, having to fade fluke shots and bad breaks on the break, but it damn sure makes it more fun to watch. And leads to some good upsets.

:) Go Qatar!!! I remember Waleed Majid(QAT) now. His performance in the 9Ball World Championship was fantastic. He placed in the final 16.

if you remember, majed beat lee van corteza and darren appleton, top 64 & 32 in world 9b. it was johann chua who was able to eliminate majed in top 16. also, the Qatar national team is coached by Antonio Gabica.

Qatar might not get back to the table if Taipei figure out the break. They were getting a little out of line early on in the last rack, but made a couple of great shots to fall back in line and ran the last 4-5 balls out pretty routinely. If they make a bad break, I don't see them coming back from that. Qatar is shooting too straight.

And right as I type that, they make an illegal break. Qatar going through the rack. If the 3 to the 4 is done right, they should clear pretty easily.

Got a little out of line, but eventually clear the table. Qatar breaking on the hill.

Dry break for Qatar...Taipei trying to clear. 7/9 are tied up on the spot...not wired. 7 can only go into the left side. Tricky shot. Over runs position by a few inches, making the shot a little more difficult, but still pots the 7, and the 8 9 go down easily.

5-6 Qatar up, Taipei breaking.

Legal break, but can't see the entire 1 to pot. Pushing out to a safety. He didn't hit it far enough! Qatar gives it back without even getting to the table to look at it.

Taipei makes a good hit, but leaves a tough shot on the 1. Majiid makes a horrible shot on the 1, missing by half a diamond. Taipei back at the table, balls spread pretty wide open with a good look at the 1.

Horrible position on the 3! Taipei have to play safe.

The commentary on the Matchroom events is the best we see all year. I can't quite put my finger on what the difference is (other than the commentators themselves), but there is a certain style. It's more minimalist. Rather than explaining every shot of every out the commentators speak more about the tone of the match overall and how the players are playing and their mindsets. Also, they aren't afraid to have some silence here and there. I dig it.

Safe did not come off, left a long open shot on the 3. Bashar pots it and leaves a shot at the 4 for Majiid. Qatar running out. Majiid pots the 9, and Taipei is eliminated from the tournament in the first round.

Taipei made some crucial errors in this match...very uncharacteristic.

 Qatar eliminates Chinese Taipeh!!! Next set of matches start at 1 pm US EST.

Yeah I agree. On so many streams they seem to be more interested in talking about what they, the commentator, would do or would have done. And telling what they believe are clever stories. And talking over each other. You don't hear that in more professional sports commentary, and you don't hear that in the Matchroom events.
