World Cup of Pool 2014(Portsmouth, UK) 23-28Sep (9ball Scotch Doubles) Winner $60K

IMHO, 3 things are consistent in such high level world class tourneys
1) Defending champs very seldom win back to back champ these days in high level world class tourneys. Don't talk tourneys of 50 or 100 years ago where competition is less and you can. FIFA WC used to have back to back champs 50 to 100 years ago but these days almost impossible. Same with World Cup of Pool or W9B
No team has won back to back in World Cup of Pool history and no one has won back to back W9B since Earl 20+ years ago,

2) The top teams that do very well in early rounds do not always get deep into tourney. Vice versa the top teams that play badly or almost lost in early rounds are more likely to end up deep into semis or final . Remember last year when England B Peach/Meiling whitewashed Germany (not just some small minnow team) 7-0 ? Until they met Finland in quarters and that was end of their fairytale. Remember last year when England A Appleton/Boyes whitewashed Indonesia 7-0 in first round ? They were stopped by Taiwan in quarters having to sit for most of match.
It is actually better for teams like Phil and China to face life or death match in early round so that they are pumped up and prepared fast for later rounds rather than have easy early rounds

3) I forgot what is the 3rd thing. Must be getting old LOL:D

The 3rd thing is don't fukc with Pinoys! :p

One team to not underestimate is the Germans. Soquet and Hohmann have played together before a few times with really good results I believe. Also, they were on the same bonus ball team so they have that doubles experience also.

For sure they made good decision to bring in Thorsten
It is strange they had Ralf partner another relative unknown Jentsch last year and they were whitewashed by England B 7-0
This year they have something to prove and they also have relatively easy rounds. I think they may win it all this year
My top 4 to win it all ( not in orderas of now)
Holland
Germany
China
England A

Dark Horse
USA (whether they go deep all depends on Earl. If he crashes USA may go out in 1st round. If he rolls they may steamroll everyone until final)
Poland

:D

Yeah I agree. On so many streams they seem to be more interested in talking about what they, the commentator, would do or would have done. And telling what they believe are clever stories. And talking over each other. You don't hear that in more professional sports commentary, and you don't hear that in the Matchroom events.

I agree with all these points. Also we don't get the needless mention of sponsors almost after every rack. I understand they help support the stream but the nonstop mentioning of them makes it feel like one long commercial. I especially can't stand when they will sneak in & put a sponsor on the stream while someone is racking. I have seen many breaks caught in the process of because the picture was mainly blocked by a sponsor image.

At this rate I mainly watch the streams on mute, much more enjoyable.

LOL I would modify that to say "Don't mess with 14 year old Pinoy pool players"

though I am still worried about Orcullo and Lee Van. They looked like they were about to come to blows last year especially when Orcullo gave some bad positions to Lee Van. i think Orcullo would have prefer to play with his buddy Biado but after that beating by two 14 years old they may dismantle their partnership for good :D

Sure, but the reason for that is almost certainly random rather than predictable. With the short races and single elimination format, not to mention that it's 9-ball, the winner is much less predictable and much less likely to be the best team. I think it would be a mistake to say that winning last year actually decreases the odds of winning the next year. It's just that the odds are so much more evenly distributed across so many teams because of the unpredictable nature of this tournament. (And that's not a criticism of the format - I think it's great and I don't mind luck being an important factor at all.)

Afternoon session is underway. The Netherlands jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but an illegal break by Feijen in the 3rd led to a safety battle which Sweden came out on top of when Chamat kick-combo'd the 2-7. It's 2-1 Netherlands up with Sweden breaking.

The break leaves no clear shot on the 2, so there is a pushout by Sweden. Netherlands takes it and theres a safety by Nick Van Den Berg. Chamat jumps the 2 in, also pocketing the 6 as well. After a long 3 ball gets potted, Chamat plays a 2 way shot on the pink 4, misses but gets safe. Feijen's kick leaves the 4 open. It's potted, but position is overrun on the 5. Another safety, which is hit and left long by VDB. After another attempted safety, the 5 is left safe, but in front of the hole. Feijen steps up and makes the full table jump, THEN draws back for position on the 7. Holland coolly runs out the rest of the balls to go up 3-1.

VDB breaks the balls cleanly. 1 and 2 are potted, but Feijen misses a very makeable 3 ball. Chamat and Larsson clear the rest of the rack. 3-2 Holland, Sweden breaking.

Dry, illegal break by Larsson in the 6th rack. the 2-9 looks like it's on. Touchy shot on the 1 for VDB, but he pots it with position on the combo. Feijen lines up the 2-9 and makes it with ease. 4-2, Holland leading, and breaking.

After Feijen's break, VDB misses an extreme back cut on the 2. Sweden plays safe, which Feijen tries to jump out of. He makes the hit, but leaves an open 2. Sweden clears a dicey rack up to bring it back to a 1 rack difference. 4-3 Netherlands up, Sweden breaking.

I was watching this rack. The 3 that Feijen missed he missed because he tried to play a firmly struck follow shot in the corner and rattled it. It seemed to me he could have played it with a lot less speed and stunned the cueball out for the 4. Strange way to play it and it cost him.

8th Rack

Chamat breaking for Sweden, and he breaks dry. The one is open to the CB, but no pocket. VDB comes with a kick, and kicks it from the top of the table into the side pocket. Feijen pockets the 2 and almost kicks the 9 in the corner pocket. Table is much more open now. The 3 goes down, but Feijen misses the 4 after VDB over runs position by a foot. 4 is hanging in the pocket with the 5 glued to the top rail opposite end of the table. Larsson makes it look easy...unfortunately, Chamat rattles the 5 out of the hole! VDB leaves Sweden long, as there was no reasonable shot. Sweden should play safe, but Larsson plays a reverse bank on the 5! No position on the 6 and Chamat almost whiffs on the cut shot, leaving the 6 ball wide open. Netherlands clear up the rest of the rack to go up 5-3.

Sweden is letting the Netherlands of the hook. Feijen has had a few very uncharacteristic misses which Sweden should have capitalized on.

VDB breaks and makes 2. Feijen attempts an off angle 2-6 combo and misses. Not much there for Sweden. A cross bank is attempted but is missed. VDB misses the resultant 2, but leaves safe. Sweden makes a good kick, and leaves a long cut for Feijen, which is potted. Looks like the dutch are going to get out here pretty routinely, and they do. 6-3 Netherlands on the hill and breaking.

They may well find their form in round 2, but I'm not terribly impressed by the Dutch so far.

I hope the rest of the us mosconi team is paying attention to this competition.

10th Rack

Netherland breaking on the hill. Feijen makes a good break, but VDB is snookered on the 1. He jumps it in with position on the 3. Rack clears up for them and the start running out. Feijen pockets the 9 to seal the win for the Dutch and they move on to the last 16, 7-3 over Sweden.

I wish the us would field a couple teams to this every year. I think the experience would be huge for the Mosconi cup
