World Cup Of Pool

Re pool......you are almost certainly correct.

Re golf........it is debatable but you are probably correct in respect of USA playing the biggest role in popularising it worldwide.

Re soccer......your comment is a top candidate for the most utterly ridiculous and most absurdly inaccurate sports related opinion posted on this website this year. You must be having a laugh as you surely cannot possibly believe what you have stated?

.........but just in case you are not just having a laugh and instead have some soccer related information that nobody else in the entire world seems to know........could you give us a brief list of some of those countries (eastern hemisphere, western hemisphere or outer space if you like) you may have in mind in which soccer was popularised as a result of any one of the following things:-

1. Televised USA soccer (as opposed to any other country's soccer) having a pivotal role in encouraging the population of the country concerned to take up the sport.

2. USA immigrants to the country concerned bringing soccer with them and introducing it to the locals.

3. Inspiration provided by the legendary skills and results produced on the soccer field by USA international soccer teams of the past.

4. Any other directly 'USA related' reasons.

Await your list of countries with interest:)

Having been a football fanatic myself for 22 years that was my feeling BUT I'm still relatively young so I thought I'd resevere judgement as my history past this time scale isnt great. However given I have never heard ANYONE make such a claim on any TV show, world cup, anywhere, not even wiki makes such a claim.

I am still curious though.

I'll just concede.

Smart move :)

Never discuss soccer (I prefer to call it football) with Brits :D (They don't have a clue anyway, most of them do NOT have Tottenham Hotspur as their favourite team, so they must be idiots)

I will follow crosseyedjoe's admirable example and concede to most of that, especially to being an idiot Brit who does not have a clue :)

......but I have a good excuse;) :p ......I hate ALL English soccer teams and last week was even an honorary fan of Norway's Rosenborg for one night when they played London's most famous Russian toy, Chelsea FC.

Even if I wasn't Scottish (which fact alone some would say disqualifies me from having any worthwhile opinion on soccer), given my country of residence for many years here in Middle East I would probably not in any case be permitted to publicly express support here for any team with Tottenham Hotspur's connections to one other particular ethnic community in London:)

Tottenham are currently sitting at an embarassing third from bottom of The Premier League after their management and their fans having proclaimed loudly before the start of this season that they are ready to at last challenge the big four at the top. A few hours ago I watched them on TV as they timidly fell behind by 4-1 in a home game to Aston Villa before luckily grabbing late goals to finally draw 4-4.:p  :)

Tottenham do have a fine history though, including having several splendid Scottish players in their teams during their glory days of the 60's.

memikey, given the way the Scots are doing in the Euro 2008 qualifiers I'd say you have every right to say whatever you want. They're flying, man!

As to hating all English clubs, that's fine. I hate nearly all of 'em too, apart from Liverpool & Swindon!;)

I love the way these threads develop into something completely different from what was intended.

Roy Steffensen is a Tottenham fan probably because he is from the same town as the former Tottenham goal keeper, Erik Thorstvedt, perhaps the best Norwegian goal keeper ever.
