Really like the lion on the 9-ball. I also noticed that two USA kids played. Surely there was a draw and it was just lucky . (Or unlucky for one). Watch out for Nick Evans from Missouri.

He's a nice-looking youjng man.

The World 9-Ball Junior and Wheelchair Championship in South Africa is on AzBilliards Main Page. There's some tabs at the top that you can click: http://www.azbilliards.com/news/stor...chair-details/

US u14 champ April Larsen just beat Ludmila Khodajeva in the opening round. Ludmila won worlds last year defeating the prior years champ and has been expected to defend her title. April came back from 4-1 to win 6-5. Little lady with huge heart! Internet here in jo'burg very sketchy, and people here are a little distracted as the entire world arrives for the Mandela services.

Thanks for the great info.

Gosh, I had forgotten about Mandela's services being country-wide. What a tragic loss. He was certainly a great man who leaves a huge legacy.

April had to recover from a bad call that handed her opponent a game. Refs here are enforcing a three balls pocketed or across the head string on the break rule. An illegal break allows the opponent to give the table back or shoot but it's not a foul. Ref gave Ludmila BIH and she ran out. Same thing happened to another American girl this morning. Fortunately April dug down and took it.

A video of something. :embarrassed2:

Of something, lol. Worst.. stream... ever. :( 2 frames per second at best, with only half the table visible.

Regardless of our US spoiled streaming selves - Hats off to the Billiard Education Foundation and everyone else that helped get 9 young men (4 in wheelchairs) and 2 young ladies all the way to S. Africa. There was a lot put behind this, and a ground swell from social media.

I can't get the brackets to open on their site. I can only see results from what I believe to be the 1st matches.

Here's another site that offers good info:

64 younguns from 22 countries battling in S Africa, how cool is that?

I think the feeds and connectivity is bad in South Africa right now because of the coverage of Mandela right now. The entire country is in mourning, I'm sure, as is the world. :(

Something about the Jr Nationals match April got though to get the spot for Worlds.
She was on the losers side a few rounds from the finals and losing to a girl from my pool room 4-2 or 4-3 in a race to 5 when I got free to watch their match.

The only reason April won to advance to the finals is the fact that the girl she was playing has only been playing pool for one year and messed up a lot of very easy shots and position plays to be able to knock April out of the tournament.

Really?
I seem to recall that April lost in the finals the two previous years to Taylor Reynolds, who is also in joburg. April is a solid player who just beat the reigning world champion coming from behind. I think that says as much about her as your comments say about you....

Hm.. you have shades of Danny Harriman in this reply LOL

I was just saying that April almost did not make it to the Worlds match and was also saying how well the other girl played to almost knock her out of the tournament even though she only was playing for a short time.

What do my comments say about me exactly? That I was there watching the match? You got me there.

You're right, I must have misunderstood your comments. I'm sure the only reason April won was that your girl played badly. It had nothing to do with her own ability.

Great new article on AzBilliards Main News Page submitted by Ian Anderson, the WPA President: HERE

American highlights are as follows.

Wheelchair Division

Three-time world champion Jouni Tähti of Finland started with a solid 7/4 win over Britain’s Matt Duffy. Another impressive start was Austria’s Emil Schranz winning 7/2 over Johnny Holland of the USA, and also Roy Kimberley of Great Britain, defeating South Africa’s Rian Janse van Rensburg 7/0

Girl's Division

Defending champion Kamila Khodajeva of Belgium looked all set for an easy victory when she was cruising 5/1 ahead, but then the wheels fell off. Her opponent April Larson of the USA took full advantage of the sudden loss of form by the defending champ and rallied with an impressive comeback to win the next five racks and claim victory 6/5.

Boy's Division

The match between USA’s Tyler Styer and Switzerland’s Daniel Schneider turned out to be a real nail biter. After Schneider had done all the hard work and on a run-out in the deciding rack, he came up a bit short with his positional play on the 8 ball making it difficult to get an easy shot at the 9 ball. He pocketed the 8 ball, but the cue ball found the side pocket which left Styer with ball in hand, and a simple shot on the winning 9-Ball.

In the evening matches from the loser’s side, all winners were impressive. Charles Gulmont of Canada defeated Joey Bourgeois Jr.of the USA 8/3, Alexnder Tapiquen of Venezuela proved too strong for South Africa’s Donovan Lipale 8/2, Mohammed Al-Ali of Qatar kept his hopes alive with a strong 8/3 win over South African Clinton Nair, and another nail biter to end the evening with Ignacio Block being victorious over Janiro Chatlein 8/7.

Looks like bad luck on the draw for the girls. April and Taylor meet in the loser's bracket today.

Boys side, Joey is out. Sergio, Brendan, and Tyler are all on the one loss side. Nick is still going strong on the winner's side.

Brendan, Tyler and Sergio are all still alive after winning their last match. Nick Evans will be on the stream table at 2 am EST against Ko from Taiwan(winners side) and for the girls Taylor will be on the stream table at 4:30 am EST (JAM Time).

The other three boys still alive are also playing at 4:30.

USA has four boys left and two BCA girls as well. single elimination starts after one more round Zombie jet lag (it's 20 hours flying to get here) and surreal conditions (the tournament is in Soweto a mile from the stadium) has not stopped our kids from showing the flag. All the other countries have Olympic level team support, our kids got here with fund raisers, bake sales, and a lot of heart. Could not be more proud of the entire North American contingent.

DAY 2

The double elimination stages were completed today, and tomorrow will see the commencement of single elimination with 16 boys, 8 girls and 8 wheelchair athletes making up the fields.

Wheelchair division:
Defending champion Henrik Larsson made short work of his two matches today to qualify himself into the single elimination stage. Larrson defeated Frederik Roussow 7/0, and Charlie Hans 7/3, thereby eliminating both these players from the competition.

Kurt Deklerck carried on (Belgium) his fine form from Day 1 when he defeated defending champion Henrik Larsson by beating Mark Jones (USA) 7/4. Three time world champion Jouni Tahti (FIN) also put in a solid performance when he defeated Roy Kimberley (GBR) 7/3.

Fred Dinsmore played himself into the quarter finals when he defeated Charlie Hans 7/4, and Emil Schranz scraped in by the narrowest of margins 7/6 in beating local champion Jan Bothmas.

Girl’s division:
The girl from Taiwan, Zhi Thing Wu, looked well in control today in beating April Larson (USA) 6/3 and advancing to the quarter finals. Also impressive was the Polish girl Kateryna Polovinchuk in accounting for her opponent Kayla Roloson of Canada 6/2. Defending champion Kamila Khodejava has saved herself from elimination and got entry into the quarter finals when today she beat both Juane David 6/3 and Julietta Block 6/4.

Boy’s division:
The boys start tomorrow with sixteen players for the single elimination stage. There were a few close matches today, but in the main most of the matches were won clearly. Aloysius Yapp of Singapore was very impressive, as was Pink Chung Ko of Taiwan. But they didn’t have it to themselves as Meshaal Al Ali of Qatar was blazing away with an easy 8/0 win over local Zander Kriel.

Brendan Crockett (USA) is in the loser’s side, but he also played steady and solid in defeating both Franco Kriel 8/2 and Gerson Bosa 8/7.

Day 3 commences at 9.00 am and the results, live streaming and live scoring can be found on www.cuesportfever.com

Looks like the girls are out. On the boys side, Sergio and Brendan are still in it on the 1-loss side. Brendan put Nick out of it and Taylor put April out of it.
