World Pool Championship - Bahrain 2027

Hard to knock the money. Players need paydays like that and there aren't many of them. My bigger worry is whether regular fans can actually get there, and whether it all holds together with how things are over there right now. Either way, I just hope the stream's solid so the rest of us can watch.
Emily said there is going to be a fan zone in Bahrain.

All 5 fans will be able to hang out and take photos with players.

I can see why one would be nervous flying to the Mideast. But I am unaware of a single person/tourist/civilian dying since the conflict with Iran began. Either flying or traveling on the ground in any of the countries affected.

Whatever the case, the Qatar event is missing some top players. Gorst and Hohmann appear to be the only top players representing the US to be listed in the field. None of the other Americans playing in Manilla appear to be going, including SVB.

Also looks like Shaw is skipping the event. Neuhausen is not on the list. I don't see Yapp or Januarta, either.

why risk it? hasn't qatar been bombed the last year, in a still open ended war?

The risk over the past nine months has turned out to be zero for tourists and travelers. That could change, but Iran has almost entirely targeted military or oil-producing assets.

you might want to take another look. There are plenty of examples. Start with the Saudi airport.
I could find no reports of tourists killed in the Mideast due to the conflict. Perhaps a dozen or more foreigners have died, mostly those who work at military installations or in the oil industry.

One American was killed by the Houthi attack at the Saudi airport last week.

The airports in Qatar and Bahrain have not been attacked since July. No one was killed.

I probably wouldn't travel to the region now, especially Saudi Arabia, but most of the top pro pool players are going to Qatar. They weighed the risks and decided the risks were very small.

yea probably because there has been zero tourists
I imagine tourism has taken a big hit. Yet only two people have died in Bahrain due to Iran-related attacks and only eight in Qatar, a quick search suggests. Clearly most players traveling to Qatar don't seem especially worried.

That’s 10 too many

You went from none killed to only a few a day later.

I did not ’talk a lot’ about how safe it is or ever say it was safe. I merely pointed out that no tourists - or athletes for that matter - have been killed in the Mideast due to the conflict.

A hundred top pool pros have weighed the risks and decided to travel to Qatar to play. Clearly they looked at it like I looked at it. Their decisions speak for themselves. Would I go there if I was a top pro? I have no way of knowing.

I’ve been to dangerous places for work and other reasons and one always has to weigh the risks. Heck, I’ve lived in Boston, NYC and Washington when murder rates were high - 2,000 killings in my first year in NYC. Someone with a knife tried to mug me in Boston and I fended him off. My dentist in Brooklyn shot a man five times after he grabbed his secretary in an attempted robbery.

Some American live with lots of risk every day.

it’s not the same.
The situation today is a lot safer as the conflict is kept on low heat until the mid elections in November.

The world championship is scheduled after November and it’s a big mystery what will the situation be by then.
Smart people shouldn’t make any plans or investments in that part of the world for the near future.

A sensible position. I preferred a different location outside the ME - everyone on this board preferred the same. But it is what it is.

Players will have to make their own decisions. April is a long off, though, and players have time to consider what to do.
