Obviously waxing a ball would make it behave differently. That would be an advantage if you personally have trained with a waxed ball but your opponent hasn't. Especially if your opponent wasn't aware you did or approve it. I'm sure Matchroom wouldn't approve of players altering the equipment. Also it's a WPA rule that balls are not to be waxed.

Waxing a cue ball makes it perform like a new cue ball and will slide like one. That's why some pool rooms will use car wax to polish the balls that are in high humidity places.
