When my colleague Luke Riches posts on this site regarding The WPC, the Mosconi Cup or any other Matchroom promoted event, the number of response postings is generally pretty low. Is there that little interest in what goes on outside the USA. It is a pity because the UK is ‘the engine room’ of the game at the moment driving on things in the Philippines and Taiwan. C’mon America, keep up!

Before commenting on this, let me state that I think Doug Gordon and Luke Riches do a great job and are making a great and lasting contribution to our sport. It's in large part due to my respect for them and their work that I feel they deserve an answer. Nonetheless, providing an answer requires some speculation.

My traditional slant on the world Pool Champioships has been that as it is telecast abroad but not in the United States, Americans are less aware of the event than is logical. Still, it's also because American pool fans have traditionally been less patriotic in pool than in some other sports. Tennis fans love it when an American wins at Wimbledon, yet as a group we American pool fans care far less about whether an American wins at the World Pool Championship.

However, gentlemen, thanks to you, the winds of change are already blowing. I beleve that by bringing the Mosconi Cup to America last year, you have heightened our patriotism when it comes to pool. We also enjoyed watching the telecast. The Mosconi Cup, because it has now been played here and telecast here, has entered our consciousness, and our pool patriotism is growing and will continue to grow.

Not so for the World Pool Championships. It has never been played or telecast in our country. I do hope that will change somewhere down the road, and when it does, look out.

The reality seems to be that events played exclusively outside the United States and to which the American pool fan has no access are not likely to capture our fullest attention. You can view that as evidencing our apathy, but such a view is a bit myopic.

While I agree with Doug Gordon's sentiments, I can't help but notice this inaccurate statement: "It is a pity because the UK is ‘the engine room’ of the game at the moment driving on things in the Philippines and Taiwan."

I'm not too familiar with how things are in the Philipines, but I can tell you that the UK is not the "engine room" that "drives" pro pool in Taiwan. The pool association there holds several international tournaments every year, with Asian, European, and American players flying in to participate. Not to mention the active pro tour with (relative to the U.S. and Europe) huge purses at every stop. Live pool makes up almost 40% of programing on 2 sports networks, and is sponsored by major corporations.

It has been like this for over a decade.

Last year there were 12 hours of highlights on Fox Sports World. That's a real niche channel which shows mostly soccer from around the world.

You are right. The lack of interest in the US stems from the fact that it is not staged here nor is it readily available for viewing on a mainstream cable outlet.

Fair comment Roger. I am aware of the contribution of people like Mr Tu and Colin Colenso have made. But for sheer quality of TV production nothing can touch Matchroom. Hopefully, ESPN Star coverage (with Matchroom input) will be 'a marriage made in heaven' for this year's Championship and take our game to new heights. I will see the depth of Taiwan talent at the Qualifiers this weekend with 60 home grown entries.
Thank you for your kind words SJM. I would love your aspirations to be fulfilled.
