World Snooker Championships 2020

Even though Selby has 3 world titles he will never go down as one of the greats of the game, i'd rather watch paint dry!

Have to disagree most snooker fans, and especially players and commentators already acknowledge that Mark Selby is already one of the greats.

He is not yet in same bracket as likes of O'Sullivan, Hendry, Davis, Reardon or John Higgins but he is in next bracket just below them.

Did people hear Ronnie interview after the match? here, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6eJM1NMLmiQ

Did he really say that he changed his grip in the final two sessions of the final match? How would a pro like ronnie change his grip in the last day of a final match and think it's good? did I hear it wrong, or did he just say that?

He messed around with his grip and it gave him confidence, that what he said.

Golfers fiddle with things all the time. Grip, alignment, putters, etc...many times a guy who missed a cut the week before will change one thing and snap off an event.

Speaking of golf, this is one of the closest things in cue sports to a pro golf payout.

500,000£ is one hell of a prize.

I'm willing to wager most players, including amateurs, have a few grips and simply don't realize it. The pros I'm sure are just more aware of what they are doing.

Finally got a chance to see part of the finals and sorry of someone mentioned it already.

Kyren Wilson is a very good player but this is what happens when you do not have a killer instinct. That McGill match was still clearly in his mind aswell as the pressure of the big stage and he let it get to him. Ronnie loves being in that spotlight and you are not going to beat players like that in that atmosphere.

Great showing from Ronnie and I hope Wilson realizes he needs to be more.mentally tough if he ever wants to.raise that trophy.

I watched parts of several of the matches on YouTube. They are all great players and they can make some amazing shots, but they all miss occasionally on these tight tables. You definitely have to hit the ball slow when you roll it along the rail to the pocket. Speed will kill you there.

The cues look short, like maybe only 55 or 56 inches, but I am told they are mostly 57". They just look shorter than that to me. I know they are lightweight as well, in the 16-17 ounce range, with tiny 10mm tips. Ash wood is preferred over maple. They are vastly different from pool cues. A big reason it's so hard to adjust between these two games. Notice also how close to the ball the players get, with 4-6 inch bridges. And they grip the butt near the very back.

Ronnie is 44 years old and still has what it takes to win a major title. He's doing something right, or maybe a lot of things. He looks so effortless at the the table, whether shooting right or left handed. He seems to "see" the pocket better than anyone, not wasting time lining up shots. You could see Kyrenn was toast after falling behind 14-8. He had resigned himself to finishing second.

Good commentary and an excellent referee for the finals!

Ronnie uses a John Parris cue. Its 58", 18oz(or 18.2 according to some) and a tip diameter of around 9.5mm. What i find crazy is these cues are not lathe turned. They are hand planed to the finished taper and diameter. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QoUooWPdLl4

Jay,

I am too lazy to do the math but a sphere loses a lot of volume and weight in a hurry when it gets smaller. I suspect the lighter cues and lighter balls have much the same weight ratios as the pool cues and pool balls.

About Wilson, I think he was toast after that semi-final. Watching that one game we don't see that they had played 32 games leading up to that decider. I don't think Wilson had recovered from that roller coaster before playing Ronnie the next day. Too, Ronnie is relaxed and comfortable anywhere, Kyren was probably tight as a tick playing Ronnie for the world championship.

"Nice find-
I also saw that vid-
"BUT ,
The snooker players are not at all like pool players regarding their cues....
Steven Hendry- ANOTHER SNOOKER Legend,
when he was interviewed about his cue-
Steven stated that the cue He played with,
came out of a "rubbish pile"
was actually a little warped-
but He won 7 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS with that cue,
and said he would still have the cue- but was destroyed at the airport

The semi was amazing and I caught most of the final and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Wilson just seemed a little off and I'm sure the semifinal took a lot out of him, but O'Sullivan played extremely well, IMO, and I'm sure experience and a waistcoat full of talent had a lot to do with it.

Really enjoyed the young fella's interview after the final. Class act.

Ronnie is very comfortable at the Crucible....he’s played a lot of matches there.
Kyren was at a disadvantage in that respect...like a road player playing a champ in his own room.
....who is also arguably the greatest.

The guy who made my snooker cue also made Graham Dott's cue when he won the world championship and said it was the worse cue he had ever made but Dott just couldn't miss with it!

I think it's not just energy saving. If you have a 20% thin cut that smashes the balls everywhere in that situation, it's a better chance than getting 8 in a row, one ball at a time. It's playing the percentages even when they are badly against you.

I was thinking something similar. With the hit hard and hope there is a certain chance he won't leave anything. He may think that is a better chance than playing into Selby's defensive strengths. Screwing with Selby's head was an additional bonus. Anyway, what really counts is what ALWAYS really counts: Scoreboard.

And let's face it, when Selby got in during the final frame he should have cleared the table. I can't imagine Ronnie not clearing in that situation.

Along with the disrespect Selby threw in an “I was sharked .”
The way I remember his remark was that Ronnie was in his line of sight and placed his cue and stood up. Hmmmm that’s the simplest of sharks and an easy one for a top pro to identify and overcome. I mean a guy that can take over 5 minutes studying a shot would’nt hesitate to get up off a shot. I mean when I get that shark I know how to deal with it. If he wasn’t man enough to get up and call Ronnie out, it’s on him. What if he called him on it and Ronnie said, “excuse me you are right that was a concession.” ?

Just a heads up, in case people were interested, the World seniors is being shown free on various platforms this week, Hendy v Bond is probably today's pick (today at 7pm local time).

Fixtures are here:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/snooker/53806982

Those that have access can watch free via the BBC, but its also being streamed on Matchroom Live and via Facebook so I think both those should be available in the US (unless DAZN have got the rights to this too of course)!!!
