World Sraight Pool Championship

Sigel

They better invite Sigel, if he does not get an invite I will basically lose all respect for the tourney right there.

I wonder if he would show given his current connection to IPT. Might be a conflict of business interests. Also, they likely won't play on slow nappy cloth.

Sigel hasn't played in a tournament in the last 10-12 years (I know he played in the 2000 US Open (straight pool) and a Seniors tourney in 2003 in FLA) but, other than those two, he has not shown much interest in playing over the last decade.

I am sure he will be invited, but I really don't think he will play. Sigel played scared at the 2000 Us Open and watching his interview at the 2000 Us Open (accu stats) his desire to play championship quality pool just isn't there. So if they did not invite Sigel to play could you really be mad at them?

I know he beat LJJ at the IPT 8-ball game in Vegas, however would Sigel have played if Reyes, Strickland, Holmman or Souquet was his opponent? Because of the money involved he would have, but I really don't think there will be a large enough prize pool in this tourny to attract Sigel. Sigel has stated many times in interviews that at the skill level that the pros at, the money is just not worth the mental anguish that they go through tourny after tourny. Mike has alot of ego and pride and I really don't think he will play in fear of embarrassing himself. His time away from top professional competition has passed, but his accomplishments are second to none...

Check it out on the AZB home page but quoting from it:

'The World Straight Pool Championship will be an elite field of 64 players including 10 qualifiers held throughout the US, Latin America, and Canada'

That is a terrible sentence but that aside, the absence of qualifiers in Asia and Europe is quite disappointing.

The last big straight pool tournament-the US Open was won by a European (Ralf) with an Asian who no one had even heard of (Min-Wai Chin) in second. Without Asian and European qualifiers at minimum, can it really be considered a legitimate World Championship?

Still I expect it to be great tournament which i will surely attend.

I wonder if Charlie Williams/Dragon Promotions will invite Mike Zuglan to this tournament?..............................mike

True enough about Sigel's reluctance to play, but here's hoping the IPT thing and also that World 8-Ball Championship he just won handily (ahem) may be enough to get him to the table for what looks like a genuine world straight-pool championship.

If Sigel is upto the challenge of playing with that caliber of players again especially mentally, All eyes will be on him and I would make him the darkhorse to win the tournament.

Zuglan is one of the best and should definately be there.

I wonder if Dick Lane will get an invite.

There is another good question for Dragon Promotions ..., Dick Lane is a Straight-Pool legend..., he loves the game and it would not surprise me if he shows up to play even if he does not get an invitation.

Not intending to take the chances of other competitors lightly, but it's high time we got Hohmann, Robles and Schmidt in the same place at the same time to play some straight pool, just to find out who will be the last man standing.

I can't wait for this one!

Gimme Thorsten, Alex, Ralf and 2-1 you can have Robles, Schmidt and the rest of the field!

No can do, as I reckon that Hohmann, having played some of the greatest straight pool ever seen at the 2005 European Championships is a clear favorite in the event. At even odds, you've got action!

I hope Mika plays as well. He also can play some mean straight pool... oh yes he can. Mika was the only player to beat Hohmann in straight pool at the EPC. He did it in the team event semi final running out the match to 125 in two innings: 42, 83.

i'm not fond of mika's patterns, but he may be the purest talent out there.

Me neither, Mika's patterns are.. well.. they suit for Mika. He's such a phenomenal shotmaker that he can run out from anywhere.

Did you know, that back in the (good ol') days when he was practising here in Helsinki, if he was playing alone, he always played straight pool. I very rarely saw him practising anything else alone. And no one wanted to practise straight pool with him, it's nice to rack for the champion of course but...

Is AzHousePro gonna let us bet our Vcash for this tournament?

Mike is quite busy but I hope he'll have time to put up some vcash bets. Also, high run bet would be nice.
