World's in Manila New Format

This is a good format. It may solve a lot of problems they had with the opening Group stages before.

If I could just convince them that a Race to 17 in the Finals is a little long. It's a big jump from 11 to 17 (approx. 50% longer match). Must be that Snooker pedigree, where lonnnng matches are the norm. :)

Once again, I applaud this change in the Group stages. BIG improvement. There will be fewer complaints, if any.

Anybody can correct me if I am wrong but the complaints in the past were due to the fact that some pros got into the last 64 with less wins than the others who were booted out. Partly because of weak groupings or pure luck.

In a nutshell, yes.

I like the format, and I like how none of the races will be shorter than 9 now. It seems like the only room for complaint will be from the players who draw the world-beaters in their first match. That first loss puts them under the gun in a big way. But it's no worse than drawing a world-beater in the first round of a standard double-elimination tourney. And since nobody will advance from the first round without having exactly two wins, and nobody will go home without exactly two losses, there's not really any room for complaint about who does and doesn't "make the cut".

I do agree with Jay that 17 seems like a big jump, 13 or 14 might be better. We'll see a champion with serious endurance, I think.

So any early predictions, now that the format is out? My money's on Bustamante to go deep into this one.

I'll take the Philipines and Taiwan vs. the Field! You can empty out.

There was also the problem common to round robins that some matches towards the end of the round would be "don't-cares" to players who already had a lock to advance. Sometimes they did not try to win those matches as hard as their fans and the bookies might have liked.

I think the new format is good even though it is called "double elimination." It turns out that you will not have two players matched up twice in the same "DE" group of 8.

I like the new format also, simply because like it has already been pointed out, it should go by the number of wins that a players has, to get through the group stages, but it's also good to see that they're going to have 2x elimination, as it'll make the tournament alot tougher and also be good for betting odds too :)

On the note of the races to 17, it wouldn't have been so bad, if the 1/4's were to 13 and the 1/2 finals to 15, but at the same time, the race to 17 gives that little bit more TV vcoverage of pool :)
