You know what, it's a movie, it's not footage of a real match. I would just bet that you were upset when Paul Newman beat Steve Mizerak or when Tom Cruiise beats Keith McCready, I could just hear you "Awwwww Geeze, Tom Cruise could never beat Keith McCready!" I'm reasonably sure that you watch Professional Wrestling and complain rather loudly because, "It ain't real". Just take it for what it is - a movie. Some Saturday evening entertainment.
Did you ever see The Exorcist, or Tombstone? Both movies I liked, but historically very inaccurate, but a high entertainment value to me.
You see, not every movie is a National Geographic Documentary, and in pretty much every movie the writer, director, actors, etc.... take some journalistic license and it makes very little difference in the story.
Who cares? it's not about pool, it's about a pool player and his mentor. It could have been a boxer, or a race car driver, or a doctor. None of the movies mentioned are really about pool, pool is incidental. The movies feature pool and as a pool player I found them fun to watch, except for Kiss Shot and that Jennifer Beretta / APA movie "9 Ball". Though I like looking at Jennifer Beretta, the movies weren't very good.
They're movies, don't try to make them in to any more than that.
