Worst Poolhall In America!!!

This place that I am officially no longer allowed to go to has got to be the worst poolhall in America, and the sad thing is that the tables are great in great condition and everything is well arranged with plenty of room between tables and a good atmosphere.

The thing that makes it the worst poohall is the idiocy and gullibility of the owners. It seems from everything that I've seen there that some road sharks and hustlers got to the place before the owners knew any better and convinced them to gear their tournaments towards them.

I didn't figure this out until tonight although I don't know why I didn't figure it out sooner. I mean I should've figured it out after the first eightball tournament I played in. Their tournaments are handicapped ok? Well, the handicap in eightball is one or two balls off the table after the break. As soon as solids and stripes are determined the player with the spot takes his balls off the table, regardless who is at the table. Sounds familiar right? That's because it's a hustle that they used in poohall junkies.

Now they have me rated as an A in their tournaments. They have a Tuesday night eightball and a Wednesday night nineball tourney. Last night I was running a couple of minutes late but it was still possible that I would make it on time. I called just to be sure and said "hey, I'm five minutes away, can you put my name down?" They replied, "yeah, if you can be here in five minutes." I said ok and tried to make it.

The tournament starts at 8 o'clock. I show up at 8:02 and wait at the counter for a couple of minutes. They come up and I say" I'm here for the tournament."

They reply, " SOrry the tournament already started."

I reply, " But I just called in and told you that I would be here?"

"Nope, sorry we have a cut off at exactly eight."

Ok, fine. I can understand that; however, they had two people with bye's.

Alright no problem. I wasted the gas driving there so I stay and end up playing some golf with some friends and paying $30 in time.

fade out to tonight. I show up in plenty of time to enter the tournament. I play in the tournament. They have always had a problem with me from day one even though when I first came in and they said that they start everyone as a B, I told them that I was a strong A and people might be upset if they played me as a B. So, I'm playing a guy to see who goes to fourth place and he gets the wild 8 from me. He proceeds to rack it in the wing of the rack. The owner is watching our match. I say to him, you probably don't want to rack it in the wing. Rack it in the front. The owner hears and sees this.

I end up winning 4-1. Next match. I'm playing a supposed 2 A which is their equivalent to a short stop. SO I'm getting the wild eight from him. He racks it in the wing for my break. He's a 2 A so he should know better than to do that so I don't say anything. I break and knock it in. He comes back over and I say I knocked in the eight on the break.

he replies, "Ok , so what it stays down."

I said "What?"

HE said it doesn't count as a win.

I say ok and walk over to the owner he says to talk to his son but he thinks that that is right. So I say to the son" ok, that's fine, but he racked it in the wing spot, in the future he shouldn't be allowed to rack it in the wing."

They reply," he can rack it wherever he wants."

" I say, F-----ing b***IT, but let's just play. and start to shoot my next shot."

The son, tells me he's going to eject me from the tournament, and I said what, come on. You guys might not know any better, but this guy is a shortstop and he does know better, he's taking advantage of you and everyone he plays here."

The guy forfeits and walk out. They blame me and say that if I don't like their rules I can stop coming. I said ok fine, after tonight I won't come back. So, after the forfeit I'm in third place and should be playing for second. THey continue the tournament with the next players and I say you can't do that. They give me my money back without giving me thrid place finish and tell me to leave before they call the cops.

Here, I am trying to help them overcome the deficiencies of the influence of hustlers on them and make it more fair for the lesser players and they pull this crap.

Sorry for the long post, but I had to get this out so I could go to sleep tonight because I am soo livid.

I'm probably going to write an article to submit to AZ about this place that's more detailed talking about the sad state of affairs in the pool community because of hustlers and sharks. This is supposed to be a gentleman's game and you can't even have that in a local tournament. It's really sad.

Nice try, but that's not even close to the worst :)

How's this:

I'm playing in a leage at a pool hall in Aurora CO. It was a screwy league where you had to play 8B, 9B and doubles 9B. The catch was you played the same player on the other team all three games. Who you play is determined by random draw. I show up for leagues, the team we're playing has a player who doesn't show up. So you'd think it would be random draw to see who the best player is. WRONG! The team whose player didn't show up gets to pick who they forfeit against. The forfeit counts as barely a win. I'm the strongest player in the league, so of course they pick me. I pay my green fees, league dues and sit there and watch my teammates get slaughtered all night because I can't play and can't coach. Can't even play the doubles.

So the league is over early because of the forfeit and I throw some balls out and shoot them down before taking the rack back up. Keep in mind I paid $10 in green fees and never hit a shot. When I take the rack back up the guy tells me I owe $10 for table time. I said "excuse me" he said, "no free practice after leagues." I tried to explain that I had paid league green fees and all the other matches were still going and I hadn't gotten to hit a ball. So HE SAYS "if you're going to be a dick, make it $20". I called the owner over to try to explain what was happening, he said he was tired of guys trying to rip him off and if I didn't like the league I could take my F***in' business elsewhere.

So I'm hot, but my teammates are counting on me and talk me into coming back for the final week. We play the team of a friend of the houseman who wanted to charge me $10 for shooting a rack of balls. My doubles partner is the weakest player on our team, literally can't make a ball. So I coach her to play safe on every shot, then I run out with ball in hand. The other team thought we 'cheated' and one guy, crying hysterically after the match said that it was his last night of league and I ruined it for him...okay, so it wasn't a total loss for me :) then the owner came over and asked what the trouble was and threw me out. I was just watching the hockey game before this guy came over and blubbered at me.

Before people jump in with all the crap about not spending money, I went there straight after work, typically ate dinner and had several drinks including a round for my team. My average weekly tab was easily $50-60.

Cheers,
RC

I'd mention the place by name (if I could remember) except that I don't want people reading this and going "oh, there's a pool hall in aurora we haven't been to, let's try it."

Jaden - IT'S JUST A GAME. :o

You need to play somewhere else, or to change from pool to boxing. Or maybe blood pressure pills. It does sound like you are not welcome there, for whatever reason; so drop the joint from your route. And move on. That's my 2-cents.

Better yet tell me where so I can make sure I drop it to. I see you are in So. Cal.

Jaden: Have you tried the 9B tourneys at DannyK's? $12 entry, two hour practice starts at 5:00 PM M, W, Th. Sat, Sun, practice starts at 11:00 AM.

Jaden....you can't help some people. I've played in, and worked a million tourneys, and ran into some strange rules and room owners. The problem is thinking the owners always know pool, and how to run things......some don't.

That being said......the best way to "get back at" any player or room is to go in, be silent, and smoke them all. If you play real good, they may have been looking for something to boot you for all along.

Yeah that was fairly obvious almost from the day I walked in, but the simple option was to move me up. I told them to make their pro rating, that would've made things more fair. It was High society billiards in Temecula, CA. Yes, I have played at Danny K's. I think overall their tourney's are held under the best circumstances and environment of any tourney I've been to. It's just a little too far of a drive for me to go there regularly.

I don't have high blood pressure. I do box and I am a person that just gets upset when I see people taking advantage of situations and other people. It was obvious that these owners didn't have a clue and had been influenced by people who like to take advantage and instead of going off of my experience and taking something away from it, they pulled this knd of crap.

I don't feel that walking away from anything is good for anybody, I;m hopeful that they will pull their heads out of their asses and take something away from last night. oh well,

Oh yeah that other story there was pretty bad. It's kinda ridiculous that people with businesses now adays seem to have lost any inkling of how to get repeat business.

I'm seriously considering opening a pool hall out here because their's is the only real poolhall out here and it had the ptoential to be a real players hang out

go play in the tourney's at family billiards in Oceanside! Really good place every wed. Don't remember start time been about 2 years! lot of good players but takes no more than 32 so call early. I played there for almost 6 years!!

which room?

It's been a little while since i have been through that area. I remember there being 2 pool rooms. One was north of Rancho California Blvd., one was south. Which one is High Society?

Two sides to every story. From what you say it sounds like a nice place to play and you got yourself thrown out. You should have just went there practiced, matched up and basically minded your own business.

I am sure you already knew how things were done there so you should have stayed out of the local politics and made the most of what the place had to offer you. You are the loser from what you have said. Now you have to find another place to go.

...well I wasn't going to be quite as harsh but yeah it sounds to me like you were argueing with the rules and shouldn't have been. You even made a local guy walk out because of it. If they say you can rack the 8 where ever you want than that means you can rack the 8 where ever you want. Whats the big deal. This does not sound like a case of hustlers taking advantage of the rack IMO. Sorry.

Not commenting on this particular situation, but . . .

Is racking the eight anywhere but the middle of the third row common? I've played 8-ball most of my life, and I've never heard of this.

Don't they play 9-ball in Florida??:D

I'm going to reply to this but if you were joking I apolagize. They were playing 9 ball and he gets the 8 and the 9 as a spot. The guy racked the 8 on the wing because it falls more frequently there. They play if you make your spotted ball on break its not a instant win so thats why he racked there. Jaden here made the 8 on break and went balistic because he didnt know that rule and forced the gentleman he was playing to leave the establishment and then goes as far to say the guys are hustling the tourny even though the GUY LEFT AND QUIT. If he was such a hustler and only out for himself why woud he forfeight and leave is my question:confused:

Much to my dismay, yes they do. Of course that means I miss out on A LOT of tournaments, since I don't care for 9-ball and won't go out of my way to play it, except as a drill.

I was serious, but only because I didn't read the original post closely enough. I saw:
I mean I should've figured it out after the first eightball tournament I played in.[/B]

but missed:
They have a Tuesday night eightball and a Wednesday night nineball tourney. Last night . . .

Thanks. I should have read more carefully and noted that today is Thursday. :o It makes a lot more sense knowing that they were playing handicapped 9-ball.

Not sure, but I think Jaden was referring to the hustler guys as different people, not the same guy who racked the 8 at the wing. The hustler dudes were the ones who told the owner to handicap 8-ball matches by having the weaker player remove balls after the break. However, as illustrated in Poolhall Junkies this actually amounts to the weaker player giving a spot to the stronger player!

With the 9-ball handicap, their rule that the wild-8 doesn't count on the break seems a little odd, but nowhere near as bad as their handicapping in the 8-ball tournaments. If they don't want the wild-8 to count on the break, they should let you request the 8 to be racked behind the 1 if you want, IMO.

I doubt they are intentionally making hustler rules, unless they have absolutely horrible business sense. More likely, they just don't know pool well enough to fully understand what's going on, and probably believe that they have optimized the rules to be the most fair. The problem is, you can't please everyone, so even if they DID have optimally fair rules, someone would still complain. So if someone complains in a manner that they consider to be rude, they'll probably just go on the defensive, which it sounds like they did, and perhaps go off on a power trip, which it also sounds like they did.

On the other hand if you can communicate your feelings in a constructive-criticism type of way, you might have a chance to show them the error of their ways. If they don't believe you, maybe you could say, "just please please watch poolhall junkies. then you'll see what I'm talking about." JMO.

Yeah the 8 ball (game) thing is just ridiculous. I was just referring to the 9 ball game Jaden was in but in all seriousness I was just being kind of a smart ass. My apolagees to Jaden. I shouldn't comment if I don't know the whole story. Maybe the place does suck.:p

There was also a time when a friend of mine and I went to a bar table tourney at a bar we'd never been to. We paid our entry fee, warmed up a couple of games and then waited for our matches.

We wait and wait and finally notice that some people are playing their second matches so we go to the tournament director and had the following conversation:

me: Are we almost up yet?
TD: What's your name?....nope, you're not in the tournament?
Me: Huh? We paid our entry, we've been waiting for our matches.
TD: Hey Joe, did these guys enter the tourney?
Joe: Yep.
TD: How come they aren't on the bracket?
Joe: Mike and Steve showed up late so I put them in instead.
Me: HUH?
TD: Sorry, you're not in the tournament.
Joe: They're regulars.
Me: ....rest deleted to keep this thread PG. :)

We were pleasantly not invited back.

First of all, to do that, but second to not even mention it so that we stood around and waited. That place soon thereafter lost it's lease (not my doing, I swear :D) and the new place played strictly BCA rules, which the no-safety allowed players hated and soon quit coming altogether.

Cheers,
RC
