Worst table install ever?

May as well at this point, I don't give a crap if I ever talk to them again. pooltabledoctor dot com is who I called. I honestly don't know the names of the two that were doing the actual install though. That company has a bunch of field guys that work for them and I'm sure some of them actually give a crap about the quality of work they produce. The two I got didn't. I live in orlando and just judged from their site that the company at least looked kinda sorta reputable. Guess I was wrong.

No money has been exchanged. I will pay them for the move if they even ask for it but nothing more than that. Haven't talked to anyone from the company since the install. Guess we'll find out. I have no pics. I was so disgusted I didn't even bother taking pictures.

I would love to get Wes Burden to do my setup, but he's mostly a diamond guy now-a-days and don't know if it would be worth his time to work on an old Gandy 150 miles away. I owned a pool hall in Tampa with 10 tables for a couple years and he did every one of my tables and they were about the best work you can get. The last install on this Gandy I have was done by (I think) John Souders and was pretty happy overall with the install. The table was dead on. I'll call him tomorrow and see what kind of time he has available.

When I went to this place, they had Diamonds and GCs and all seemed to be in fine shape, and the locals seemed to like it: http://cuephoria.com/index.html. I would go there or call them, find out who they use, and go with that person.

Web sites are like renting a DVD to take home and watch, a lot of times the picture showing the movie on the rental screen looks way better than the movie when you get back home and actually start watching it, that's when you figure out its not worth watching at all.

Billiard retail stores are usually not the best places to go to find good table mechanics. Maybe you should contact a couple of the best pool rooms in your area and ask them who services their tables. They would probably be much more helpful in steering you in the right direction.

Roger

I usually call the local pool rooms for recommendations...not that they use the best guys.
I found my mechanic here on AzB. Did my research and his name kept coming up strong.

If I were you, I would ask the Company who did the work, to give you the new cloth for the table, and refund the table set up charge.
Then go online and watch a few videos of people doing it, and explaining it.
I just bought a 15 year old Olhausen 8' table, and did that. Getting the 3 slates, level and on sae plane was fun. Shim, measure. Repeat many times!
It came out great. I reinstalled the cloth that was on it, and didn't have to do the rails.

I lucked out. The seller didn't know what brand it was. A friend gave it to him and he never assembled it. He never looked at the end rail, to see the name plate. I didn't see it when I bought the table. I knew from looking at it, that it was a good table.
When I got it home, I discovered it was a Olhausen!
The seller thru in the 4' Lite Beer table light, and real wood billiard pub sign, a nice set of Aramath balls. and assorted cues.
Not bad for $175

Yeah great deal. Some people just need / want to get rid of stuff and money is not really the issue, just getting it out of the house is the priority.

Fortunately I haven't paid them a cent yet. Still haven't heard from them, and I'm not the one that's going to initiate it. I already have a guy that should be able to do a complete re-build from the frame up and put down simonis 860 hr for about $400. Not bad since that's not much more than the retail cost of the cloth alone

Well, I was wondering if you were a gluten for punishment, but now I don't have to wonder any more;)

That's a pretty solid deal for a big table. Hopefully it is salvageable after the hack job was put on it.

Yeah should be ok. I already seperated all the pieces and removed all the shims.

RKC Do you think that price is too high for a setup with 860? What's a more reasonable price?

I might not be the brightest light in the room, but the last thing I would do on a table install would be to shop for price.

When I setup my GC I in 1998 I went to the local Brunswick dealer because I wanted someone with experience with GC's to setup the table. With Simonis cloth the charge was ~$600, 17 years ago. AFAIK, the setup is fine, but for all I know it could be better with an A-list mechanic.

If I ever move this table or acquire another I would use the best mechanic I could find and wouldn't care where he was located as long as he would do my table.

The setup is the most valuable aspect of owing a table.

Regarding The Pool Table Doctor, are there really that many pool tables being moved/bought/sold/needing setup that a service would have 7 locations, or are these just phone numbers of setup people they hire?

No, I think you're being deceived once again. Here's what I want you to do. Ask that next so called table mechanic for a breakdown in his price quote, such as how much for cloth, how much to level the slates and frame, and how much to install the cloth. Once you have that break down, and you get the price for the cloth out in the open, the ask him how much then to do the job if you supply the cloth yourself....in other words, if he's quoting you $400 and saying $300 of that is cloth cost....then if you supply the cloth....is he really going to do all that work for $100.....really???... make sure you have your tennis shows on so you're ready to run from that deal buddy. Retail prices on cloth are only quoted high to the end customers, in no way in hell does anyone that knows what they're doing in this business....pay retail pricing. That game is called the hide the secret money game, buy cheap, sell high....to you, then claim it's all because of the high cost of cloth, mean while that Mark up on cloth gets added to the labor you were also charged for...after he leaves the job site. I'm sorry, but table mechanics that hide profit in marking up materials instead of being up front about their real labor charges just piss me off, and they are the ones directly responsible for customers not wanting to have a high end cloth like Simonis installed, which is exactly how cheaper cloths get introduced into this industry....because there's always a cheaper cloth available if you don't want to pay top dollar for Simonis....in which affords the mechanic an even better wholesale/retail spread on the profit.

I am going to have to agree with you on this... No self-respecting mechanic, who values his work at all, would fix this table for $400 (cloth included)..

I try to keep my prices fair, and often times, don't charge enough.. But, $400 is incredibly cheap, and I can't imagine doing this job for that little, not with cloth included.

Actually this guy I know, he's a table mechanic by trade. He did my table the first time so I know I'm good. I should have just called him in the first place. I know he can get a deal on cloth so that's why I decided to go with him and simonis instead of going with el-cheapo cloth which is what the other guys were installing. I only said $300 because I know that's the high end retail price. I know dealers will likely get 50% or more off of that. I used to be a pool equipment supplier myself. The $400 is definately a "friend" price and probably a bit too low

I finally got John Souders from Billiard Technology of Orlando to come set up my table. Complete night and day level of professionalism. He literally spent all day on my table making sure it was right and better yet even, he knew exactly what he was doing the whole time. The table came out awesome. Thanks so much John.

Also yes he's a man of his word he did the whole thing 860 hr included for $400. I feel bad now as that is way too low. I should throw him a c-note next time i see him. He was working on the table from 10am to about 6pm. Crazy. It was a complete rebuild with some having to un-do redo some of the last crap work. Also I had taken the rails completely apart to cover them with black gloss auto wrap which came out amazing btw. The last pic is a reference from when I bought it.
