Would you enjoy playing in a pool room without music?

Don't care

I don't care either way as long as I get to play pool. Sure I would like to listen to the type of music I like, but most the places I play pool don't play my kind of music. Also when I practice at my house I normally have the TV on, and not music. So it really doesn't matter much to me.

Would I enjoy playing in a pool hall without music?? ABSALUTELY!! I don't like the new kind of music they play now a days. Rock or Jazz or nothing!

The first pool room I ever played in had no music. 8 tables, hardwood floors, and wooden spectator chairs. The sound of balls hitting each other and the pockets was all the music I needed to hear.

I attended a couple of the old Camel Tour events, and the arena had a sound system set up to play music, but the volume was very low. I think if you are going to have music and pool together, the music should be BACKGROUND music...not the main event!

No music would be best. Clearly won't happen most places. I suppose this is the real underlying problem with pool right now, and perhaps forever. When you strip off the veneer how popular would it be? Get rid of music, leagues, alcohol, and gambling more than minor stakes and how many people would play? Fix that and you will have found what ails the sport. For the sport to thrive people need to want to play it, and play it without extraneous BS. When pool was healthier, people would support a pool hall without all the distractions and add-ons. No more I guess.

We just had the Texas Open this past weekend at G-cue and they played music through almost the whole entire time the tourney was going on. IMO, that was great. It wasn't too soft that you could barely hear it. And it wasn't too loud. When they have the music off or barely on, you can hear everything. From the people in the stands to the guy who is drunk and side betting making noises to rattle the other player or going off when his player gets out or whatever. I just feel that it is better to have some music on so you can drown out the crowd. And far as pool halls around here (Texas), most of the time the music is loud anyway and I think most players are use to that.

At the Texas Open, several players came asked me to have the music lowered. Like you, I thought it was about right
The noisy, drunken sidebettor you refer to, I like the old timer, but I did everything but tackle him a couple of times. He even sharked his own horse one time.
It was fun to see the crowd so "into" the finals.

Why does some common sense like Nostrokes post be so uncommon?
I would do exactly the same thing should I ever get to open a room.
I think there is a time for both. The other night I had a date with a woman who didn't know how to play - it was nice to have some music and non-pool atmosphere. Same when I'm with buddies who don't play much and we want to just hang out, talk, have fun. But I can remember those lunch hours at the Pool Room in Marietta when there was no music - it was great. Sometimes I play the scene in "The Hustler" where they walk into Ames and there is no sound but the clacking of balls and low conversation, just because it reminds me a little of the atmosphere when I'm enjoying the game most.

It's funny, but at Shooters now, the playing of 'Hard Rock', or head banging or rap has subsided (maybe they are listening to the players finally), and softer style of music is getting played which is much more enjoyable for a Pool player. Frank Sinatra and Cher get played a lot, some of the older bands like Doobie Brothers, Steely Dan, and country favorites. No, I like music in the Poolroom as long as it is not too loud (a bartender that doesn't listen to drunk nonplaying customers to turn it up).

Karoake is the pits. 90% of them CAN NOT SING TO BEGIN WITH, and they should audition those people before letting someone up there to make a fool out of themselves. Then if they don't put them in a place away from the tables it makes it doubly worse. I just love to get down on match ball, and just as I am about to my hit stroke, have some yocal hit a loud SOUR note that pierces your ears. If they are in a different room away from the tables, I can put up with it, but many places are short on space.

Don't know, don't care

I was just thinking about an article I saw about one of the oldest rooms in the country closing and that it never played music at all, no juke box, no sound system at all, just pool. I know in this day and age all pool rooms seem to have a sound system in the background.

Would you enjoy playing where the only music was the pool balls themselves and if a certain block of time was set aside for players to play without music of any kind.

It was a different era but I think years ago most rooms were music free.

I find the idea kind of interesting.

I couldn't hum or tell you the name of one song that they've played at the pool hall I play at, ever. I can't even remember if they play music except for the fact that other people complain about it being too loud sometimes.

I guess I just tune it out.

Seriously, if you're thinking anything about the music besides letting it help you get in a rhythm, how can you possibly be playing well? I think this, like gallery noise, is something that you just have to learn to ignore if it's not directly helping you.

Cheers,
RC

Great comments and ideas!!! Myself, I would love a certain few hours a week or a day set aside as music free. Get the best of both worlds.

Not bad-With a 'Play it now' feature, it would go over big in many pool rooms.

Play it now rules.Have to like the down loading a song to.Bose jukebox is the way to go for any bar or pool hall.:) :)

I like it as long as it is good music not some Britney Spears playing in the background LOL. But i also love the silence

Music in a pool hall is nearly equivalent to music in the library, or gangster rap meditation, or rock & roll chess. I even hate music in the gym except to break the tedium of aerobics. Lest you conclude that I just hate music, the truth is that I love European classical, jazz, blues, & country, when I want to listen to music. Music in the pool hall & similar settings is like doing your taxes while making love.

everynow and then i like music in the background. but to be honest nothing beats the sound of those balls craking together or the sound of a rack being broken. That's music
