Would You Really Be a Road Player?

C'mon, let's get serious! The first premise of the original post, let us remember, is that you play like Efren. Despite the poor state of the sport, it is preposterous to say that you have no future and no financial prospects if you are arguably the best all-around player who ever lived. Therefore, in my mind, the course of action (excuse the pun) is obvious. You get a backer and a backup man, and you go on the road in North America, Europe and Asia looking for the biggest action you can find. When that begins to run dry and you have lost any shot at anonymity, you go on the tournament trail and build a Hall of Fame career.

Oh, I forgot! Somebody who plays like Efren has already done that! So much for it not being feasible. Does anyone honestly mean to tell me that most of the posters on this forum wouldn't switch places with Efren?

Lets say your game magically improves, and you start playing as good as Efren. If you had a large bankroll, would you really go on the road, travelling with just a friend or two for a few months?............

No. Didn't you learn anything from watching the Hustler? :D

I would do just what Gleason/Fats did in the movie. Have everyone come to your place. That way you get to have your own mafia. You control everything. Why be stupid?

WW - thinking outside the box. :D

Any of you former Road Dogs come thru Austin in the 70's and 80's?

Reason I ask is as a kid I went to one of the Villa Capri tournies as a spectator that is featured in Bill Porters Picture Collection. I also went into Moyer's aka the Austin Cue Club to watch a few events there too. Be cool to hear some stories about the happenings here from some of the "Been there and done thats." :)

Was there for one, Dead Money. James Christopher won it. I believe James was the most underrated players ever. Tremendous money maker. Played with an open bridge all his life. That alone trapped most people. James is in some of the Bill Porter photos.

Professor, you make the best posts and responses to everyone's dilemma. You must be Dr. Laura in real life?

I agree, I would much rather do this than go on the road for months at a time. I would still travel somewhat to play in tournaments, but I don't think I'd want to live under the radar and get involved in gambling to make a living. I'd rather do it off tournaments. If I played like Efren, and drew a pro in a tournament, I could make some pretty good scores just by sidebetting with the rail, provided they didn't know who I was yet. Man that would be cool.

Derby City would be like heaven.

If I were Efren's speed and unknown, I would call myself Cesar Morales and go to the first beeg tournament in January that I could find and not stop playing until about ten days later.

Yes, if I were Efren's speed and unknown then I would make at least one road trip across the country to play everyone that wanted to play. I wouldn't hustle them, i'd hoorah them by declaring that I play damn good and they ought to just trot out their best player and their bankrolls.
