I think the IPT, Darren’s tour, Heyball, etc, are/were trying to recruit some 8 ball bar bangers. This was the wrong approach. Better to show them a better game that is exciting.

Almost every single one of us started on 8 ball when we were bangers, and very quickly threw it out the window once we got the pool bug.

I personally feel those Chinese 8-ball tables are an absolute abomination. If someone wants to play pocket billiards on a table with snooker-shaped pockets pockets, just play snooker. Leave the pockets of a pool table alone, such that it's still possible to fire in an OB down the rail.

The IPT had it somewhat correct by incorporating the slow cloth, because we all know 8-ball with fast cloth and 4.5" pockets is just too easy for the pros. But I've been advocating this idea for a decade, but if we want to make 8-ball for the pros more interesting, instead of mucking with the table (3.5" pockets, or snooker shaped pockets, or slow nap cloth), simply increase the number of objects above 15 (to 21, for example). Adding a few more balls is a whole lot easier than modifying (or in heyball's case completely redesigning) existing pool tables.

it's not a bad idea, i would like to see some pros testing it. but it's another massive change to the game.

as for the heyball table, i'm not sure it's a variety of the snooker table. the rounded pockets for pool tables are common in UK, australia, india, africa etc, but are usually barboxes. been around forever. heyball is upscaled english 8-ball.

8 ball is boring due to the structure of the game. When played well there is little CB movement and the shots are tap tap tap. 9 ball forces zig zag shots.

I think even 14-1 is better than 8 ball. Even though little CB movement in that game, there are many trick shots, break shots, and secondary break shots. And there are not even the tap tap tap of 8 ball. It’s usually with a lot more authority in 14-1 for even stop shot patterns. Plus it builds momentum as the runs get higher.

8 ball is the worst of the games imo for viewing.

To each his own.
