WPBA worst dressed list

I attended the Great Lakes tournament Saturday night and was treated to some world class 9-ball. Congradulations Alican. What I didn't see was proper dress for professional athletes. To name a few (there were others) Helena Thornfeldt wore a shirt that looked like it came from a second hand store. Laura Smith wore well I'm not sure what look she was going for. Monica Werbb played in what looked like wrinkled pajamas. Doesn't the WPBA have a dress code or is it just ignored. If you work in the entertainment industry, like these women do, looks do count. People won't be attracted to pool when some of the upper classwomen show up looking like bums. JMHO.

I'm going to have to disagree with you there. If this were a televised event, I can understand requiring some sort of dress code but, aside from that, if I were in a tournament that required me to be in a pool hall, on my feet, for several hours a day for at least two days, I would want to be as comfortable as possible.

These women are showcasing their talent on the table. They are not getting paid to be fashion icons. They simply show up and try to do their best. So why force them to wear something uncomfortable just to present some sort of false appearance for the spectator who will be out the door a few hours later and onto someplace else?

Jeanette is a poor example. She dresses like that for the sole purpose of marketing herself to a crowd. As far as the female tour goes, she has seen her ranking slip in the past decade. She went from tops in the game to just inside the top 10 and, as a result, she has to present an image to stay at the forefront of people's attention. Thus, you get a women who dresses provacatively, always wears head to toe black, is remarkably arrogant, and talks to the camera/crowd too much.

Also, I've seen the likes of Vivian, Tiffany, Kim Shaw, and even Jennifer Baretta play in tournaments that were not televised and they too dressed down.

As far as Julie Kelly and Karen Corr go, I think they wear clothes of that nature as their style of dress be it on or off the table. I have never seen them in anything but pants and a silk blouse. Although, come to think of it, I saw Julie in a Joss Tour event a few weeks ago where she too was dressed down.

Men and women alike will dress accordingly from tournament to tournament. If there is a camera crew there, you can bet, there will be dress codes and they will be adhered to. If not, bet on seeing casual dress on at least half the field. And why not? Its about the game they play. Not about how they look playing it.

The WPBA does have a dress code, but there is nothing in it that mandates the players become fashion icons. As in general society, some players choose to dress better than others. In the end, it is a personal choice, as it should be.

This is true. Practically every tour has a dress code. The problem with dress codes is that it is an assumption made by the powers that be that all participating players have the same standards of dress. Many do not. Which is why you will have some players dress nicely which means they iron their jeans and their t-shirts don't say Budweiser on them. That is "dressed up" to some people.

Still, these players should be allowed to wear whatever they want providing they are not offending anybody.

Hell! I have more of a problem with Jeanette Lee's tiresome black catsuits and things of that nature than I do with Monica wearing jeans or cargo pants. Then again, I'm hopelessly in love with Monica Webb so I guess I have a bias. :D

I think that you have the typical pool player mentality. However Kevin and I will have to go it alone. LOL

Who says they aren't fashion icons?

I'm a woman pool player and I personally hate "dressing up" to play in a tournament. I do abide by the rules of whatever tournament I play in, but I usually barely meet the requirements. My favorite attire to play pool is jeans, tennis shoes, and short sleeved collared shirt. The more comfortable I am, the better I play. There will always be women that dress better than others because thats just what they prefer to wear. Thats what they play better in.

However, the current fashion might not be what you think it is. I've seen the way Monica Webb dresses both down and up and she's usually on par for the current younger woman casual fashion.

Who knows... maybe that style of dress might encourage some young woman to play more pool because she realizes not all women pool players play pool in high heels and skin tight outfits.

Different styles for different people.

Hi,
Well Stated

When I lived near L.A., I had the opportunity to visit a couple of "open" sets during filming production and, believe me, if they weren't in a scene, the actors dressed like Bike Week in Snerdsberg, Arkansas. Seeing an actress in a baggy "To Hell with the Whales, Save the Tuna, I'm on a Diet" T-shirt, after I'd seen her on the red carpet show at the Academy Awards a few months before looking dazzling, did nothing to change my high opinion of her. I look at the "pre-TV" rounds of the tournement as a version of an "open" set; the women are dressed for comfort, not for show. In addition, a lot of the players are not making money on the tour, don't have sponsors, and may not be able to shell out the bucks it cost to be a fashion plate. I say, salute those that look sharp, and wink at the ones that don't; hey, they're all giving it everything they've got.

hi,
You put it very well.

Monica has become one of the best pool players in the world, so I really don't care what she wears...she's simply a da** good player and that's what impresses me!

Remember how Jackie Gleason dressed when he portrayed Minnesota Fats in the movie "The Hustler"? I'm sure he felt "comfortable" beating Fast Eddie out of $20k! The top players know they are icons, and dress to portray good taste along with their skill. Look at Allison and Gerda.

Grow up!

I think its in the mind....That some of you. can not bare the concept that a woman dressing Casual!!!!!!! can kick your ass on the table....

I totally agree with another poster.......... If it were a televised event...then by all means dress your best to impress!.....if it's jsut a regular tourney then no need to to get all fashoined up. simple as that........

I also agree with Deanna. I go to watch pool. not stare at the players asses!

I think its some of you Clothe Nazi's need to grow up!

I think Monica is one of the more stylish women on the tour but it is not the typical "girly look" that some people might consider stylish. It is hipper and sportier and I think perfect for her and who she is as a player...

I personally don't give a rat's a$$ how any woman dresses to shoot pool, but I DO remember a Challenge of Champions tournament that Jeanette Lee was in and missed a makeable shot on the 9-ball because she lost her focus when a strap on her dress was giving her problems. Anyone remember that? I bet, deep down inside, she was wishing she had on a more casual attire at that moment :o !!!

I agree with cuechick. When I've seen Monica she has been dressed sporty, but not necessarily "fancy".

If professionals pool players want to increase audience interest for these tournaments, televised or not, it is in their own interest to dress at least better than the average bar player.

Dress nice and casual is okay

I agree. For example the pro golfers on tour are always dressed nice even though it is basically pretty casual attire. They don't necessarily wear tuxedo's or even ties but they still look clean and sharp in their dress.
