Wrap considerations

I've got a Sailor cue that I love to play with but I am unhappy with the color of the wrap and am going to have it changed.

I usually play with, and have always preferred, no-wrap cues but this cue has a wrap that is very smooth, you can barely feel the texture of the wrap, and it's quite slick and it feels good. I like the slickness because I like to use the "throw" technique or some call it stroke slip... letting the cue slide through the hand on the forward stroke.

What might have been done to the wrap to make it much more smooth and slick than normal linen wrap? I've heard of double pressed and I've heard of polished linen wrap. Could this be what makes the cue so slick?

I have read that of all the wrap choices the stacked leather grip is most like playing with a no-wrap cue. Would the stacked leather really cause it to feel a lot like a no-wrap cue? How does that work? Is the leather sanded to a smooth finish after it's stacked?

a double pressed linen wrap will feel very smooth, so will a polished linen wrap, either will be way more smooth than standard linen. the stack wrap does feel like playing with an unwraped cue. they smooth the leather out and burnish it with a form of polish that makes the leather feel seamless, hard, and smooth. i personally have a cue that has stack leather on there, and i like it alot and i too cannot shoot with standard linen wraps, hope this helps -- tony

Very helpful Tony.. thanks. Personal experience was what I wanted most especially regarding how the stacked leather feels.

Anybody had experience with Muellers stacked leather wrapping jobs? Or any recommendations?

Keep in mind that a pressed/polished wrap slides through your hand MUCH more easily that a cue with NO wrap. Give it a try and you'll see what I mean.

So I discovered when I got this cue and I was surprised but...

What I do not care for is having to adjust from feeling wrap to feeling the butt sleeve and back to the wrap. With a wrapless cue the feel is closer to being seamless. This is especially true on shots where I use back hand english and consequently use a longer bridge and the grip is then further back on the cue.

Having said that maybe what I need to do is have the cue wrapped in a linen that I like the look of and then have it clear-coated like a Meucci. That way I get the seamless feel.

getting a linen wrap clear coated is probably the way to go for a seamless feel. Probably will be a little more expensive, but would be exactly what you are looking for.

Reads like me! I say try a cork wrap. I prefer no wrap, but got a cork one recently and after about 10min, felt just right.

What do you like about the stacked leather?

How does cork compare to linen or stacked leather? Slick? Not slick? Seems like it would be easily damaged and weather would affect it. Get dirty easy, absorb sweat and get sticky?
