Wrap thickness?

Hey everyone I have an elephant ear hide and some other exotic hides that I am thinking about making into wrap blanks, is there a preference for the thickness of wrap materials? I have one that is .0300" and was going to go by that for a reference....but can they be thicker? does it effect quality if you take them down to far?

.030 is to thick for a wrap on a cue as far as I'm concerned. Most cues have the wrap groove cut at a depth of .025. Using .030 your wrap will either be proud of the groove or the groove must be cut deeper which can affect both the integrity of the cue and the way the cue plays.

.021 to .025" is the most common range for wrap thickness. If leather is already at .030, you're challenged as it cannot reliably be resplit from there. Generally you need to be at least .010" over and more is better than less for dry splitting. The better cuemakers I know do not like cutting more deeply into a cue to install a wrap than the dimensions mentioned above. YMMV.

This is why a proper Elephant wrap is so expensive. Very seldom can you have Elephant split to .026 or less without the hide developing pinholes. High quality wraps that do not have these holes when split to that thickness are the best feeling wraps of any material. Using thicker wraps has so many downsides it is not worth even considering.

wow thanks for the help guys! I have a ear hide that hasn't been turned down yet the grain in not very deap at all and think I might be able to have it shaved to .02+/- grain depth is .015=+/- I was asking because I didn't know if the wrap would have a better feel if it was thicker? apparently I wasn't taking into consiteration the integrity of the cue if the handle was cut deeper! I had ordered a nice ear wrap from (someoene on here) that was almost perfect .03 all the way around I had thought that that was pretty good? (my first time with a solid wrap) so is the wrap that I bought no good? there are no pin holes in the wrap might be able to bring it down a little bit?
