wrong weight question?

A well known pro and pool room owner
looked at my predator 5K with a sniper tip.

He said let me tune it up, we went to the lathe and he worked his magic on it.
He then tested it out and commented it felt light!
He weighed it and it was 17.8Oz.
The cue was ordered from seyberts 19 Oz.
I checked my BK 1 also a predator it read same17.8 oz.also
this cue was not purchased from seyberts.
Neither of these cues had a weight bolt installed!

I went to valley forge and spoke directly to predator rep there
he weighed and confirmed previous stated low weight.
Charlie Williams comment was I'll take it I like a light cue!

the factory rep added bolt to cue ,I will recheck again as I did not want to appear as a idiot!

I asked rep how this could of happened?

No real answer but they did fix cue

I talked to other cue makers and was told predators and others cues are now being made in china and shipped here, it seems these cues should be checked out before sending out!

Just letting everybody in on what's happening!
 
So they added 1.2 oz at the bottom of the cue?
There goes the balance of that cue.
IT's now azz heavy.

I am confused but I feel I was really overpowering shots due to light weight!
What do you think I should do?

I am confused and will have to talk about this with cuemakers at valley Forge, by the way Tony( Black Boar)was there all night thurs. for conversation!
I think He might know something about solution!

The show is wonderful and I am 35 min. away I bought a event pass and will be there as much as I can!
 
Adding an ounce at the bottom of the cue is never good imo. After the cue was finished?
How do you offset that counter-balance?
 
After I am done with my research you can bet I will be asking Predator
if what you are saying is true!
 
The question now is balance by adding weight!
What weight is a good thread topic!
The consensus of people I spoke to was19 Oz is the standard!
 
More reason to buy a cue from someone who actually made it, someone you can talk to on the phone with if you have a problem. Its hard to call a employee working on an assembly line in asia. Well, maybe not... perhaps that would explain the missing weight bolts...

While working furiously installing weight bolts on predator cue's assembly line, Xiuwu Liu heard his number called over the loudspeaker, "Employee Number 43234 you have a phone call." Liu leaves his post to field the call; on the other line he hears an american voice muttering something about a bumper. Not being fluent in English, Liu says "F****** Capitilists!" in chinese and returns to his post.

If it was supposed to be a 19 oz cue, then it was probably front heavy without the weight bolt and now it's "normal".

Easy for me to say from a thousand miles away...

I just looked at shipping invoice from seyberts and it was plain this cue was listed at 19oz.
I remember a 19oz sticker on BK1 cue and invoice also shows weight as 19oz.
Wow!
I bet alot of other cues are not what we think they are!

Funny but true!

Thanks for all of your thoughts for me to consider.
I also have a custom Webb cue with a extra predator 314 made by Mike Webb.

I retired this beautiful cue as I don't want to take cue to bars for league play!
 
All cues are butt heavy to varying degrees. That is why the balance point is well behind the center of the cue. And that is as it should be. Physiologically, you want to pull weight on the forward stroke not push it.

A great many cues, including custom cues use weight bolts. As Patrick pointed out, it is likely that the cue was improperly unbalanced due to the absence of the weight bolt.

It seems that someone simply forgot to screw the weight bolt in at the end of the assembly process. No big deal.

Yes there are bigger problems, I thought it was interesting that this happened twice!

My assumption is that it's not going to play any different that any other 19oz Pred.

They are seriously mass produced with minimal QC in my experience and getting worse. Warranty returns around here are way on the rise.

My assumption , once again , is that they are just cranking them all out the same and adding a bolt to meet required weight and not at all biulding balance in during contruction as a custom builder would. Same is true , of course , with matching a shaft to it.*

For grins , I will pull some bolts out of 19's here and see what they are and post back.

I purchased my Dominiak with a 19oz. spec. and played with it a good 6 months. I then purchased an OB-1 shaft which was lighter than the original shaft, so I weighed everything to see what I would have. To my surprise the original Dominiak was close to 20.5 oz. Now it is possible that Bill put more weight in it to balance the cue better, I didn't ask him. I also weighed my old cue which was labeled 19 oz. and it was close to 18.5 oz., so you never know until you actually put it on a scale.
 
I bought a Schon off E-bay that said it weighed 19 oz....It felt light so I had it weighed and it was 17.6 oz...I called Schon and Evan Clake said to send it to him and he would get in within mm of the 19 oz and have it back in 1 week. Two months later with lots of phone calls and E-MAILS I got it back. It was 18.6 oz....
I also bought a Predator which was supposed to be 19 oz and it was 18.2 oz....
That's why I always ask the seller if he has personally weighed it and I want to bid but not until he confirms the weight for me....

1st question, do you like the current balance of the cue?
If yes , keep it and maybe try another style of tip, or give yourself time.
2nd Is the cue the wrong weight and balance. ?Then send it back telling them the problems you would like to be corrected.
For me , the hit of a cue is more important than the total weight. As for balance, I don't like them too front heavy, but I am not a top player.
I make the cue to the weight and balance point of the customer.If I like it or not , it is the customer that needs to be happy with the product.
I would not like to make comments on made in China or Not, As I do not have the facts on that. Best not to say anything.
But you can ask where the cue is made. Hopefully they will be honest with their reply.Being assembled in USA is not the same as Made in the USA.
I like to try and keep locals employed when I spend my money.
It is the power of the consumer.

If you are a serious player, I would suggest getting your own accurate scale. I have my own scale and I have found that many cue weights are not what they are marked!

For speed control, it is essential that you pick a weight of cue you prefer, then make darn sure any future cues you buy also have that same weight.

Note that the cheap plastic kitchen scales sold in discount stores are not accurate. I paid $80 dollars for a fairly good scale.
