Hey folks,

I'm interested in finding some dark reddish brown phenolic material. I need enough for a small buttcap, joint and ringwork for two (2) shafts.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thx,

Ken ;)

Thanks for the Pics!

Thanks for the pics Kev......did you stain this phenolic or is it really that dark with just the finish on it!? :)

I got a sample of the brown from chad when it first came out and the joint and butt size materials did not match at all. The butt size was a little darker and the weave looked very nice. The joint size looked like it was not the same type of weave and oldmost looked like the resin was dirty when it was made. The joint just looked plain light brown and the butt nearly looked like wood the weave was so visable. I ended up using the butt material to make joint collars as well so the parts would match up. Has anyone bought any lately? Has it improved over the first samples? Chris.

Its that dark.
As for Chris's concerns....the last shipment I received had the color of the joint & butt sizes matching. My only complaint is that its a bit porous...more so than the natural brown. You'll have some small pits that'll need to be filled. You can see them filled with CA in this pic.

Here's a pic of the butt size. This piece was smooth...a few others had pits like the joint size. The pits are fine really. You can fill them with CA, epoxy, or clearcoat. Most wouldn't notice them really and just think its the character of the material.

Its suppose to look like this...but its no match. While the older natural was indeed a bit darker than the current available...only father time gives it this shade.;)

This is a nice color! But, the older stuff is my preference!! Thanks for the pics Kev!!!

Just remember that if you get a piece of older material, it'll lighten as you cut/turn/sand it. It'll be about as light as the new stuff...then it'll take time to darken up. So your choices are limited.

Reddish brown phenolic

Ken,

Long time no talk- how's it been going? I saw your post for the linen, so I thought I'd send this pic to you- I occasionally machine large washers (24" in diameter) out of this stuff for mining shafts. Anyway, this particular piece is sheet rod, and cuebuilders prefer rolled rod usually. The next time I use a piece, I'll save some if you like.

The other pieces in the pic are both G-10. The rod is about 3.5" in diam. and the sheet is 12" x 12" x 1" thick. That should make quite a few joint pins.

I'll also still hold you to the free beers if I make it up to your part of the country sometime.

If you reply, send directly to whislercues@cox.net as I am rarely on azb.

Cheers,

Scott

this is the nuts... old stuff is the best. new natural is pinkish yuck. takes years to darken up. a friends said he tried everything. oils stains only time will do it.

i ordered 4 ft of each size of the atlas mahogany and returned it all immediatly. just isnt the same!!!
