Some posters have used a home made lathe that incorporates the use of a crutch tip attached to a drill. The crutch tip is the right size to hold a shaft very snugly and can be used to polish a shaft, etc. Very easy to make.

Drill a hole in a crutch tip, run a bolt through the hole w/a large washer on either side. Put on a nut, Put the blot in a drill.

Experiment. It works great.

I don't know of any lathes for $300. Maybe $1,300.

I don't mined pouting out the money if it is worth it.

We'd all rather have a lathe! :D

But they are real hard to find and then when you do find one they sell high and quickly. That's why I brought up the the crutch tip tool. It works well for spinning a shaft. Good luck.
 
I do have a modified wood lathe has roller rest, 4 jaw chuck, Crutch tip mod if you wish not to use a chuck. Good for shaft cleaning, and tip replacements. If interested I can snap some pics. It was used only a month before I got my lathes.

I have 2 lathes I would let go. Both together you can do a lot more. I really was not considering selling however I am not using them.
The Modified Wood Lathe is the green lathe with roller rest and 4 jaw chuck.

The wood lathe will do basic tip repair and shaft cleaning. If you add a foot controlled rheostat then you could wraps.

The Mini Lathe will do ferrule replacement and cut tennons.

Both weigh about 100# each so according to ups depending on location shipping each would be around $100 or so. I will take fair offers if some one wants one of these or both.

I like it alot, plus you can either make a bed extension or buy this bed http://www.littlemachineshop.com/products/product_view.php?ProductID=1284&category= and adapt it to line up heightwise, I think for an extra $80-$90 and be able to clean and do not only shafts, you will also be able to clean and polish butts, and do wraps.
I found mine on ebay slightly used and got a great deal. I have seen the harborfreight one and it's very sloppy IMO. They are all made by the same company, but to each importers specs. That's why the Micro-Mark is more money. It's a better built unit.
The only other I would recommend would be Chris's Micro-Cue lathes. I have heard only great things about them.
