I have a nice used Jacoby D-5 $350 shipped. It's a 10 point sneaky made of Cocobolo and BEM retailed new for $650
 
My friend has 2 new joseys in your price range. I absolutly love the jb cue. If I didnt buy my Judd I would own that cue right now. Pm me if you want some info or pm mike mertins.

By "nothing fancy" do you mean that you want a very "sneaky" sneaky or that you don't want to spend too much? Big pin production cues include names Jacoby, Fury, 5280, McDermott, etc. They're all around $300 or less (brand new).
$500 will buy you a sneaky from from a respected custom cue maker; however, your friend doesn't need to spend anywhere near that to get a cue that plays well.
I have several big pin sneakies. A bit more information would help greatly.

I have a Keith Josey sneaky Pete with a wrap. Cocobola points in birdseye maple. Has a huge radial pin with wood to wood joint...nice stiff hit. Shaft is conic taper at 12.75 mm.

Will let go for 450.00.
