Nine ball league match last night.

Giving the 8ball.

Snookered under the 6...can't see the 5, 7, or 8 balls.

I lost from here. This did not come as a surprise.:p

btw: he put me here by missing a bank on the 5 to the side and rattling the scratch in the corner...if it matters;)

This is representative of the tone of the night.:angry::D





 
That's a pretty bad spot to be in..
Depends on the opponent I guess.
Against a weak player, I would bump the 9 down to the middle of the end rail, taking away the easy combo and leaving maximum distance between the 8 and 9.
Against a strong player, I would probably go for a one-rail kick. Aiming the center diamond on the far end rail is likely to result in a good hit, since the 5 is right on the path to the pocket.
 
The only thing you can do here is kick one rail at the 5. You can either kick with speed to get separation or softly to try and hide the cue or the 5 behind the 8 or the 7. In this situation its pretty clear what to do and you are not the favorite to win no matter which route you take. All you can do is decide firmly on what you want to do and hope you get a roll. What you really should be asking yourself is not how do I win from here, but how did I let myself be put in this position in the first place.

Edit: If you don't think you are going to hit the 5, bump the 9 like victor said.

Well, this looks like a pretty decent jump shot, if the 6 is just 1/4 in the way!
The bank is an option, but the rest of the layout is too easy, if you leave a good shot on the 5 even after hitting it.
A great position for the 9 would be just to hit it 2~3 inches to the right of the side pocket, maybe at the rail.

To 3RAILKICK: can you hit the middle diamond on the far rail from there? One rail kick ram shot!!
 
Oops didn't realize you were giving up the 8...
In that case, the kick on the 5 is really the only shot.
 
That's rough with the 9 in front of the pocket. If that 9 wasn't sitting where it is, I'd tie up the 8 ball with the 6. As the table sits, I like Victors assessment. Bump the 9 to the middle of the long rail if you don't think your opponent can run the 4 balls he needs to win. If he can, you have to go at the kick. Tough spot.
 
I avoided a headshot, but got gunned down more slowly and painfully. lol:(

ps: cb too close to 6 to jump...at least by me...I jump with break cue. ..and I didn't want to risk missing the one rail kick on the 5.

Damn, if you could go 3 rails into the side of the 5, the cb might drop the 9.

And be sure to bet it all on your opponent from there!

I didn't want to leave the easy 5-9 combo so I moved the 9. At least make him run a couple of ball...and maybe get lucky.

So, I tried to do a couple of things..but primarily to move the 9.

I didn't like the one rail kick on the 5 the long way...I have a tendency to add some spin that affects the accuracy, especially since I would have wanted to hit it with some pace and was almost frozen to the rail

Because I was close to the 6, I jacked up a bit and banked the 6 toward the 8, hoping to maybe get a kiss off the 8 and maybe make the 6 where it started from, and maybe make the 8 in either side.

I hit the cb with slightly jacked up inside stun. It helped turn the 6 coming off the rail toward the 8. The cb slid up the long rail and hit about a diamond short of the side pocket and pushed the 9 down about a diamond toward the corner.

The 6 caught a little of the 8 coming off the rail, but just ended up making the run out easier.:cool:

Everything considered..I was happy with the result of the plan...moved the 9, avoided the sellout 5-9 combination...got some action on the 6 and 8 that might have saved me...just wasn't in the cards.

I lost, but went down firing with a sort of a plan..but, the rearranging of furniture wasn't enough.

He is a capable player, and ran the balls needed to get out. Good job John.

I was content with my effort, even though it didn't save my sorry azz.:p

..another 9ball adventure:D and nobody got hurt:thumbup:
 
its a 2 rail kick shot , kick the 5 towards the 7 ball and cue ball slides down by the 8 ball leaving your opponent snookered behind one of them balls or leaving a tough bank.
 
I'd try to freeze the 6 to the 8. Anything in this scenario is low % but if you can freeze it and make it a tough combo, throw shot, or hard to kick it clear maybe you get another chance at the table.

From that distance its alomost impossible to freeze 6 on the 8 and leave no shot. not to mention with ball in hand on the 5 , its would be real easy to open up 6 and 8 if you even did get them froze. so the kick has a much more higher percentage of winning then tieing up 6 and 8.

It depends on what kind of player you're playing against. Like I said any option here is going to be low %.

I don't think "its a 2 rail kick shot , kick the 5 towards the 7 ball and cue ball slides down by the 8 ball leaving your opponent snookered behind one of them balls or leaving a tough bank." is any higher % of a shot for anyone asking this question. Maybe if you're the kind of guy who doesn't need to post this kind of question it's the "no brainer shot".

I would love to play you in this scenario and I would actually wish you would freeze the 6 to the 8 ... as I picked up BIH and put the 5-9 combo in. :)

I like the idea of hitting the 5 by going 2 rails so that you push it towards the 7 and maybe get a block but I am too much of a wimp to trust things would work out. My first priority is to get that 9 away from the pocket. I think it was your highest percentage chance in a low percentage situation. Sometimes things just suck.

Yes, you can go for the kick on the 5 and hope for the lucky block but aiming for one side of the 5 to kick it in a particular direction to get a safety leads to you easily missing the ball and giving your opponent and easy combo for game.

Haha, yeah, silly me going for the easy shot for the money.

Oddly enough, I tried to fill up my gas tank the other day by explaining to the guy that I didn't take the easy combo on the 9 and tried for the runout but lost, yet he wouldn't take that as payment. :)

The hyper aggressive shot is to kick at the five with speed trying to cut it in the side or make it in the corner or just hope something good happens. The conservative shot is to kick at it softly trying to hit the right side and let the five land on the lower side rail and the cue ball come down by the six. Or go the other way and hit the left side putting the five on the rail between the nine and six and the cueball down table.

Or you could go super nuts and try for the two rail ticky to carom the nine in.
