YAIGST: Yet Another I Got Stiffed Thread

UPDATE: I still haven't received the money.

I left the kid another voice mail on Monday and he replied with a text message: "Man im working right now and i am supposed to sell my car n the next couple of days so ten ill bring u your money sorry its taking so long".

Yeah okay. He better start working OT too!

On Tuesday I find out that he supposedly had a backer, but the backer left before we were finished. And of course the kid won't cough up the name. So now there's a mysterious second party that I have to be wary of in the future.

On Wednesday I find out through a friend of his that he did indeed sell his car... for $500. Which isn't quite enough cash, but I don't guess it matters because I seriously doubt I'll see any of it.

Then on Thursday I find out who the mysterious backer is, and also find out that he was only good for the first set (which I won). After that, the kid was supposed to be playing on his own money. No matter as this isn't someone I'd do business with anyways.

What kills me is that had I lost, I would have paid off on the spot. I thought there was supposed to be honor among thieves.

ps, I can't stop my leg!

Excuse me? I guess you missed the part where I said we had 2 DD's. Which means Designated Drivers.

Haha! I thought for sure you meant bOObs too!

You get paid yet?

I know, I know, I know... make 'em post.

I own a pool room here in Greensboro, NC. And I should know better than to play for any sort of "real" money w/o making my opponent post up. But here's what happened...

This past Tuesday, another local restaurant/bar had this girl-on-girl kissing contest. The idea was apparently sparked by that "I Kissed a Girl" song by Katy Perry. Being the sexual deviants we are, myself, one of my bartenders, a few friends, and a few of my customers all pile into a couple of cars and drive across town to watch chicks make out.

I figure it's "market research" since I'm in the bar business too, so I'm treating everyone to a good time. In a 2 hour time span we run up almost a $400 tab. I'm not exactly sure, but I think I drank 8 shots of Crown and 5 Budweisers.

So after we watch chicks kissing we get in our cars and drive back to my pool room (we had 2 DD's!). Needless to say, we're all wasted, myself included, so I have another shot and another beer.

This kid says "Hey Eric, wanna gamble?". To which I reply with a slur, "Sure! I'll take the 8, race to 7 for $100". It's about 12:30am.

By 4:45am I've beaten this kid out of $500 playing for $100/set. We played 6 sets and he only won one somewhere in the middle. I let him know that I'm not really interested in staying much later and that we need to wrap it up. We agree on one final set, double or nothing race to 9.

I win 9-3 and now I'm up $1k. What a great night! Got to watch chicks making out, got hammered, and won a thousand dollars. Right?

Of course, he doesn't have the money. I let him know that when he pays off I'll return his pool sticks (worth about $150 retail).

Here it is Sunday afternoon, the kid still hasn't paid off and he's not returning any of the numerous voice mails I've left him over the past few days. The word around town is that I have zero chance of ever getting paid.

My question to all you folks is this: What should I do with his sticks?

I've considered snapping the shafts and returning them, sans the case (it's a nice case!), to the room in which he hangs out.

Someone suggested I sell the sticks for a dollar and give the money to the kid -- he needs it, apparently.

Someone else suggested I start a "wall of shame" here in my room: hang up the sticks along w/ a picture of the kid.

I'm also considering making flyers and sending them to all the pool rooms in NC:

DO NOT PLAY <name here>

[his photo]

DOES NOT PAY OFF

Anyone have better suggestions?

eric

You own a poolroom and played $100 sets with a kid, and then let him put FIVE sets on the wire. Shame on you Eric.
I could go along with you not posting and paying off after every set. That wouldn't be so bad, you could only get stiffed for one set. That said, it's never usually a good idea to gamble with customers. If you win, you take the chance of losing their business. And if you lose, well you lose!

Just sell the cues and the "nice" case and move on like Androd said. It's obvious you need the money a lot less than he does. And you never know, if you just forget about it, his conscience may work on him and he may come in and pay you something. He may even play you again when he has money. Right now, all you've got are his cues and you've lost his business. Was it worth it?

You are SO EASY.
Crawfish told me so and now even the kids are getting over on you. :D :D

Now that's funny. I still haven't been paid yet, either. I am pretty sure I will see my guy tonight. I know where he plays league.

I would suggest waiting a few weeks and see what happens. He may pay you some or all of it, or he may not. I've played on my nerve a few times and lost, but everyone knew I was good for it and I always paid up. I won a few, too;)
You don't have to make it as public as putting it on the wall, but I'd make sure it went around that he made a bet and didn't pay up. People talk, ya know.

I have to vote for the wall of shame idea. Take pictures of the cues and case, then sell them. Put an "invoice" so to speak under the picture him and his cues.

BTW...no video of the contest?? :D

You have ben paid all you are going to get, two cheap cues. The kid did the math and $150 IS EASIER THAN $800.

Hmmmmm.......

if your gonna be a sucker be a quiet one.
keep the cue a reasonable period of time, then sell or whatever makes you feel better.
As I recall you replied similarly to another guy who got stiffed, I could be wrong. You don't happen to be an air barreler yourself are ya?

I say do the wall of shame and display the cue as reminder to any other prospective welchers in the area.;)

Here's another update:

I STILL HAVEN'T BEEN PAID.

But it gets better...

If you recall, he's trying to sell his car/truck to pay me, but hasn't yet. Or so he says.

So we have this fairly nasty text-message exchange the other night where I say, "Sign the title over to me".

He says, "Give me back my cues undamaged and I will". To which I reply, "Deal. Let's go to the DMV".

I'm still waiting for him to confirm that he's got the title free-n-clear, but I actually have a good vibe that he's going to pay off with his red, 1994 Jeep Cherokee.

I've made some phone calls and from what I understand it's in fairly good condition, actually runs, and has high miles.

So we'll see. Maybe I'll have won a "new" truck.

If you do end up with it, you know you have to get a personalized license plate to commemorate how you ended up with that truck... :)

Or, get it heavily insured and put a bumper sticker on it saying:

"If you can read this, then you are going 20 mph too slow. You get jelly."

See above, but I might just get his truck. So I'm not going to sell the cues just yet.

That said, you're right, it's not really a good idea to gamble with customers. And I generally don't. This kid, however, isn't really a customer. He came down looking for action with me. He got it and he lost.

I got air-barreled. It happens. Totally my fault. A mistake I won't make again.

No WAY, Drater.
Just ain't gonna happen. Nope. Never happen. No way are you going to get a truck that is in fairly good condition and one that actually runs.

BTW, is it his only means of transportation? :crying:

I was thinking that same thing. You're not gonna take the kid's only ride, are you? Cold. Put him on a payment plan.

Wanna bet? Just spot me 3 months (to wait him out), and if I instead get paid in cash then we break even.

This is going to sound really bad, but I hope so.

Words really can't describe how pissed off I am over this. I would never, and have never, done this to anyone. If he had beat me out of $1k, I'd have paid off on the spot.

It's been weeks, I want something other than his cheap sticks.

I know how you feel, bro. I am chasing this $250 guy of mine around like a madman. This guy didn't even have enough for the first set. He also left a bogus credit card at the poolroom for a $120 dollar tab.
