That Schon and Joss cues "Are the same company and made out of the same factory just with different names".

I didnt seem to recall that being right so I said I would ask.. Anyone know anything about that? I personally think a Schon plays about a grilled tilapia and crabcake better than a Joss.

From Schon's site:

Schon Custom Cues came into existence in 1981 and we have been at our Burnham St. location since 1986. We have a miniscule output , sometimes going 2 weeks without actually finishing any cues. I frequently hear the all knowing term “production cue” applied to our cues with an implied sneer. The fact is that we are one of the oldest custom cuemakers in the world with a total staff today of 5 people. I personally design, finish and test every cue myself. Everyone here is a full time craftsman, not telemarketers or corporate hypsters. The only thing we do is make cues...Evan Clarke 1-11-05
 
Uhhh, I would place a strong bet it isn't true. Maybe this person meant in concept or something.

If we all had a nickel for those things "so and so in a pool hall said was true"...
 
Well he defined it like toyota and lexus and scion are all the same company with different names which is true.

I didnt think it was true but it's faster to poll an educated audience while at work.

Nope, not the same company.
First of all, I do not understand your "tilapia and crab cake comment". :confused: Probably because I won't eat farmed raised fish and make the best "Maryland Jumbo Lump Backfin crab cakes in the world myself!:D Just ask my wife about that.
As far as the cues are concerned, you will spend more on a Schon than most Joss cues. Dan makes a reasonably priced playing cue for those that can't afford a high dollar cue. I also notice that most people who are players, that aren't hung up on impressing others with their cue, play with a Joss. I do cue repair for a hobby and can confirm this. Most of the best players I know have played with a Joss in their time. My last comment is that it is not the arrow but the archer.
At this point in my game, I play pretty much the same with an origional Adams Monte Carlo as I do with my $6,600 custom. JMHO

Yea I've never shot with a "nice" looking cue ever before now.. didnt care about impressing at all. I just bought this schon from someone hurting for money and since my other cue is now having problems made this my player and the guy just said that's a nice schon they hit well.. but a joss is cheaper and the same as a schon since they're the same company.

That's how it came up.

I am always wary of a man wielding a well used Joss... tend to play pretty sporty, I have noticed.

I'm going to assume this comment refers to me :p Don't correct me.

Anyway, more on topic, it's easily provable that Joss and Schon are independent companies, but the hit is remarkably similar in my opinion. I play with a $200 Joss (the simplest and cheapest they make), and it's built as solidly and hits as well as anything else I've tried. If I need to replace it, I'll look for another Joss before shopping for anything else.

I didn't think about you Andrew. You are just another example of what I was saying. I had another player ask me to re-tip the same model as yours last week. You can quit saying that you play with a $200 Joss my friend. That is a #07-07 and retails for $365. And if you don't mind me saying so, you play pretty damn sporty with that "Joss" cue of yours.

I have apoligize right now for making a comment about Dan Jane's cues being made in China. I just got off the phone with him, and I was completely mistaken in my comment. It was told to me several years ago, and obviously is wrong. I apoligize to Dan, and anyone else who took this to be true.

Well, thanks for the kind words, but my cue is not a #07-07, although it does look quite similar. Mine's a JOS01, which I bought new about 3.5 years ago from an online billiards warehouse store (not directly from Joss) for $199. I saw a man break and run 6 racks in a row on Scotty Townsend with a beat-up, half warped Joss sneaky pete in Ft. Walton Beach, FL.
 
Not the same company, but a somewhat similar build....different hit IMO. Don't forget MANY of the best cue makers came out of the Joss shop, or in the very same area in MD like (and correct me if I'm wrong) the guys at Black Boar, Phillippe, Joss West, Mottey, Scruggs, Black, MAN....that would be a nice collection.

haha I dont even use your schon. I gave that to my girlfriend. Hers (ex yours) is worth more than mine lol. I'm using an stl-8.

I knew that Bill Stroud was Dan Jane's partner until he went on his own to begin Joss West. It was at that time that everyone started calling Joss Cues {Dan Janes} Joss East, before it became Joss Cues, Ltd. Tim Scruggs told me about his working in Dan's shop before he went on his own. I did not know about the others you mention. To my knowledge, Richard Black did not. According to the Blue Book 2nd ed., Richard gave away a Joss cue made by Dan Janes at a tournament, and decided he would try to make one himself. The rest is history.
The original post reminds me of a guy I know who absolutely insisted that the Balabushka used in The Color of Money was a real Balabushka, and not a Joss.

The last time I was in Dan's shop, there was a picture of a young Mile Segal at the lathe.
My problem with Scott's post is this.
I am not fond of someone who pays $20 for a Chinese made cue and sells it here in the US for $350.
That is disgusting to me. A fair mark-up is fine with me. When you charge me 17.5 X what it cost you, you are just a thief in my book. You can not put a guy like Dan Janes in the same book with them. The man is one of the hardest working cue makers in the industry and does quite a bit to support our wonderful sport.
