You can make a living playing a video game.....

Look up Optic Nadeshot. The kid has 1million + subs on YT, plus streaming, tournaments and endorsements....one of which is Red Bull

closing in on $10,000,000

This year's dota 2 international championship is going to be the largest prize pool for any eSport event yet with a total purse of http://www.gamersbook.com/News/Article/ID/1061/The-International-2014-Reaches-96-M

I think 16 invited teams along with 4 qualifying teams will compete and the majority of the purse will go to the winning team.

Get this, the prize pool started at 1.6 mil. and the remaining 8 mil. has been funded by the players. There is a $10 digital book the players buy and $2.50 of each purchase goes toward the international prize pool. That is a lot of books sold!

Video games are not evil. There are not solely to blame for the demise of pool. What's really the difference between playing videos games and playing pool?

I suppose they can both be viewed as trivial pursuits right?

The thing that I point out to my children about video games is as you get older you will never look back and say "man I really wish I had played that game more." I suppose the only caveat to that would be if there was some sort of financial incentive that was missed out on.

Once a video game is mastered it gets replaced with a new one. I suppose some of the skills learned from the old games can be carried over to the new ones. But for the most part the old games collect dust until they are sold at a garage sale for a couple of dollars and then inevitably -- they end up on the shelves at a thrift store.

Pool is a lifelong pursuit. The game will never be totally mastered. This is what separates the two I think. I put pool in the same category as music, art, and the acquiring of knowledge. At least this is what I've been preaching to my kids the past few years. Like many parents -- I'm having mixed results.

Man I really wish I had played more Tecmo Bowl.
