That has to be the dumbest statement ever written about language. Why didn't you just go back to the origin of communication and just getting and gesture? Language adapts. If something adapts to the point that it is the main form, it is not correct to ignore it. 'Golfing' is more widely used than 'playing golf'.
Have you ever fished, or do you still angle? Or is fishing wrong, also?
Show us any valid source that claims golf isn't a verb. Toothless people in Alabama aren't a valid source. Your preference is not a valid source.

I am an avid golfer and have never heard anybody use the phrase "swing golf". Now I have heard golfers complain about people using the phrase "let's go golfing" instead of "let's play a round of golf". Those who think they're pros can get picky, and dis less cultured individuals over their choice of words (ft).

I don't think I would golf with them.
I thought this post was originally about playing golf on a billiards table, which is when a player is assigned a numbered ball and plays the game by banking the first and last holes and plays the holes in rotation, usually on a snooker table. I guess it is not and has to be one of the most suspect / air filled posts out there (AI / Russian troll bots?).
You:

go golfing
play a round (of golf)
And you:
shoot pool
hit a good shot (playing pool)
have a good stroke (as a pool player)
made a good stroke (on a particular pool shot)

Seriously, though, if you swing a golf club rather than stroking it why does the USGA rule book refer to the act of striking the ball with the club as a "stroke"? But.... you're using a club! If a caveman was trying to chase up something for dinner I'm pretty sure he didn't stroke it with his club. I'm so confused now.

The saying is "you play golf, not golf swing".
The pool equivalent would obv be , "you play pool, not pool stroke".
What they mean is to focus on the game and executing your shots rather than focusing on what u are doing with ur body or the tool in ur hand in order to execute swings/strokes.

There are many subtle differences in the saying that lead directly to the same meaning.
Knowing ones game and as u said executing the shots well without mechanics/fundamentals in mind is the key.
It’s about leaving the practice tee/table behind & playing the game!!
After all that, you're asking me this question? What's your angle? LOL Are you then going to ask me if I consider myself a golfer? I'm a person who plays golf. If you watch a pro golf tournament, the participants are referred to as players, not golfers.

I like this quote and feel like you did well in interpreting it in post #18. It means that there is so much more to golf than swing mechanics. It is equally true that there is so much more to pool than stroke mechanics.
Those that focus on their mechanics alone in either sport will be limited in their growth as players.

If you stick around for award ceremonies, the winner of The Open Championship has been referred to as "Championship golfer of the year" when receiving the Claret Jug since they started handing it out. Take the L and move on. 'Golf' has been used as a verb for as long as ppl have been golfing.
Golfer (noun): one who golfs

I call the arm that moves the cue stick "The Swing Arm." Does the arm push or pull the cue?
Similar to folks who play pool or pool players, golfers or people who play golf can have a great swing that produces a beautiful stroke. When was the last time you saw an Albatross on a golf course?
The OED considers words for inclusion if they are used and understood by a wide audience and have been in use for a significant amount of time.
