You have 3 players. You break the balls into 3 groupings (1-5,6-10, and 11-15) Whoever breaks does so like a normal 8 ball game, if he sinks at least one ball and picks a grouping. The object of the game is to clear the other two player's balls off the table. You shoot till you miss, if you desire you can sink your own ball simply to keep your inning alive.

After missing the second player shoots, when he makes a ball he can pick one of the two remaining groups left and the third player is left with the last grouping.

If you scratch the two other players get a ball back out of the pockets and spots it on the footspot and your turn is over.

If all your balls are off the table you are no longer in the game and it is down to the two remaining players.

Game ends when you are the only player remaining with balls on the table.

I've had some good fun with the game especially when you have an odd number of players. It gets kinda tricky remembering what group you have after several beers though lol.

Yep.. Play it a lot with my two buddies. Its great fun and also skillful. When the conditions are right I have run out more than once. When they try and double team you watch out though! I lost some money more than once.

Yes, played it just a couple weeks ago against 2 women at a party, since it gave them a chance to double-team me, but sadly, I whooped 'em every time. lol :p

I only play it with my "social pool" friends only because thats really the only game they have a decent chance in winning in, and even not that often. Its funny when someone isnt sure of who to go for first. I remember one time my friends were double teaming me and i was taking out one first before the other. The one that had most of his balls left on the table scratched on purpose to try to help out the other guy. I got pissed off at that that i just took the ball in hand and ran out his set. The games kinda fun, but after awhile it just gets boring.

My mistake, i guess i should have been more clear. It was BIH in the kitchen. I still consider that as BIH though.

Cutthroat was always one of my favorite games. Especially with the rule that on a scratch the opponents get to spot back up a ball (even if they have been eliminated earlier). A great game when drinking and sharking are both allowed and encouraged.

Unfortunately, as you get better, the game is less fun. With my current professional opponents, first one to the table wins, because running out is usually pretty easy (if you are also allowed to make your own balls and keep shooting).

It is easy to handicap - just take fewer balls. Against the teenagers, I take just the 8-ball, they take solids and stripes (though they can't shoot the 8 after a scratch - house rule). They can win a few games this way.

It can also be played by 5 people, each with 3 balls. I have a fuzzy recollection of an evening playing 5-man cutthroat ... the games were exceptionally long due to the frequent discussions about who had what balls :) The lesson was that alchohol and 5-man cutthroat do not mix well !

These days I much prefer to play "18 holes of golf on a pool table" when playing socially with 2 or 3 or 4 or 5 other people of various skills. It too is easy to handicap, and due to the nature of the game the least skilled player spends the most time at the table.

Played it last night. We play ball in hand after a scratch anywhere on the table. House rules rule! p.s. especially since we played at my house!

When my one really competitive brother visits home in the summertime we get a game with my younger brother. Then my nieces ( my younger brother's girls) sit around and cheer me on - "Dad (or Uncle Paul), hurry up and miss so Aunty Barbara can shoot." I've run the table on them a few times.

LOL!! Gotta love them nieces.

Even at my level (APA SL5) it's not hard to run out if you have any sort of spread, if you're playing that you can keep your inning alive by sinking your own ball. It's just like running 14 balls out of a wide open straight pool rack (and in cutthroat the racks are much more open than they ever get in straight). Just make sure the ball you save for last (in straight this would be your break ball) is in your set of balls. You don't even have to get position on it. My friends stopped playing me the first time I broke and ran it out.
