Pool halls are smokey, in my local hall, nearly everyone smokes. It's always smokey, I come home smelling like smoke everyday. I'm wondering if there is a majority of pool players that smoke or that do not smoke...let's find out.
Well I do smoke, but never when I shoot in a league. It becomes to distracting. I do smoke when just hanging around.

Smoke sometimes, typically carry Copenhagen with me.....

Thanks for bringing this up.....been thinking about this a LOT lately....been dipping/smoking since I was 14.....have quit, sometimes for 6 months, sometimes for over a year.....always seem to come back when there is some type of rough patch.....anyway, the only time I have tobacco is when I'm bored....ie, relaxing on the couch after a long day at work, keeping score or waiting for a game of pool, driving on a long trip....

When I'm at work, or working out, or playing sports, or shooting pool, or anything busy/active, I don't do either....haven't quite yet figured out a way to be busy 24 hours a day :D

Interesting poll so far, I would have thought the smokers would outnumber the nonsmokers...hmm

most of the smokers are out smoking instead of being on the computer. lol :)

Put me in the 'Y' column as well. Used to be, I'd get angry at all the non-smoking quasi-facist zealots passing laws to take away my liberties. Now I realize, I've been beating up the world's fist with my face. I have got to quit. It's bad for me, real bad. I remember last saturday, playing in a $1000 added local tournament. I was playing arguably the best player in Colorado. It was a race to 9, we went hill-hill, and by the time it was over, all I could do was shake his hand, and make a bee-line to the door to stick a cigarette in my mouth. What a junkie.

Hey Purdman,
Thank you for the wishes of luck. I started smoking when I was 13 years old and I am now 28. I have been smoking for over half of my life and I have quit for periods of time before. When I started smoking - it was 1.95 a pack. Yesterday I paid 6.00 even for a pack. There are two things that are motivating me to quit. One is the health of my body and the other is the health of my bank account. It is 2200.00 bucks a year to smoke at 6.00 a pack. How stupid it would be to keep going. My wife and I are quitting together. I know we can do it. Anyways thanks again for the encouragement.

BVal

BVal, I know y'all can do it too!! My 22 year old son quit smoking AND drinking about 4 weeks ago, both at the same time. He's doing good with it. He actually is already starting to feel the good results of quitting and is now wondering why he ever started in the first place. That $2,200 a year you are sucking down your lungs could sure buy you some fine cues ;) !
Good luck to you and your wife, and BTW, I still think you have the finest looking lady on the planet (after mine that is)!!!

Since I can't delete anymore, I am overwriting my post. :)

I started when I was 18 (no it wasn't because I was finally legal to smoke :p there's no "legal age" in the philippines) and stopped 6 months ago. Used to smoke 1 pack day, but now, I don't even crave for it even if all my friends smoke around me.

The town I live in passed a no smoking ordinance. One Pool room is closing in a few months due to the ban, and another has lost alot of business to another pool room in a close town.

The Chamber of Commerce of the neighboring town had reported a 33% increase in revenue for their town since the ordinance went in effect in my town.

The Chamber of Commerce said they dont have any plans to try to pass an anti smoking law. Why would they? Business is picking up.

All this talk makes me want a cigarette.

I humbly encourage you to quit. I smoked from 1960 until last year. Today is day # 357. I have not smoked 7,140 cigarettes and saved $1,428.
Best of luck to you.

Good for you PURDMAN!! I quit about 1986, smoking tobacco, and have no idea what I have saved. My lungs for sure.

It is a fact secondhand smoke is like you are smoking . Just smell your clothes at the end of night in bar league or room.

These places have so-called smoke abatement systems. There is no safe levels of exposure to the poisonous, cancer causing , heart destroying air pollution. 50% of US population are presently protected and this is escalating.

I can't see why I have to smoke your Cigarettes unwillingly.

Guess what ,relief is coming in PA. senate, 31 Jan. 07 reported out of committee a smoking ban to be voted and debated on. Las Vegas just put a ban in place. except casino areas , that is called gradual plan to lead to total ban.
Don't be surprised if the ban only works for a few weeks or so. Here in Austin Tx we have a smoking ban. And it's not working. At first the bar/pool hall owners or managers were ones getting fines. Now the city has made it to where the individual is responsible for getting the fine. Smoke at your own risk. But no one from the health Dept is getting out at night and ticketing people. So they know they are safe. All the bar/pool hall owners have to do is have no smoking signs and no ashtrays. But they just give them water and a small cup for ashcups. So now in Sept the vote will be up again. I hope this time it will really work.

I started smoking on December 17th, 1969; one month before my mom died of lung cancer from her 4-5 pack a day habit. I quit for a year one time, but picked it back up. I guess some time around December 17th last year I started thinking about quitting. I started to have blood in my morning mucous discharge. Just before Christmas, I got strep throat. Not too bad, just enough to make things a little worse.
I recovered after a week or so and went to a small family reunion during the second week of January. I didn't really feel very healthy and seeing the kids and grandkids made me think even more about quitting. My wife stayed at the reunion a few days longer than I did and when she got home, she was very sick for about a week. Just as she started to recover, I got sick.
Here in Washington you have to smoke outside, so I was still smoking 5 or 6 smokes a day, but it wasn't very satisfying. As my illness lingered (sinus & lung infection), I was down to 2 or 3 a day. I worked from home 4 days last week. Friday, we had our APA Tri-Cups tournament, so I went to work and then over to the bar in Oregon for the tournament. Everybody there was chain smoking like there was no tomorrow. I sat there in that environment for 3 and a half hours and thought I was going to die. Playing my match was very surreal. I played really well but couldn't think properly and ended up getting outsmarted in the end.
Fortunately we played in the non-smoking section the next day and I was blowing blood out of my nose all day along with the snot from the night before. We ended up losing our second match and got eliminated, which was just fine for me. Sunday I finally went to the doctor and got some antibiotics. The doctor told me smoking with my infections was like throwing gasoline on a fire to try to put it out. I didn't agree with his analogy, but I could tell it wasn't helping.
I think I smoked one and a half or two cigarettes Sunday. Monday, I smoked half a cig and Tuesday I smoked half a cig. Today is my second day of no smoking. I can say that right now, I'm a non-smoker!
To address the poll, I would have to say that in our area, most pool players are also cigarette smokers. After the indoor smoking ban, I haven't noticed any drop off in patronage at the bars I play at. Everyone on my APA team smokes and all but two of my teammates in the other league smoke (one quit last year after a heart attack and bypass surgery).
It's a nasty habit but can be very satisfying at the same time. I smoked everywhere I lived until about two years ago. It didn't take long before I couldn't stand the smell if I smoked in the house or pool room. I had a guy come out and play several months ago and we played for several hours, both smoking vigorously the whole time. It took at least two weeks with the window open, air freshener, and the fan on 24/7 to get rid of the smell. I'm still not convinced that it's all gone.
Otay, I'm done.

I've never took up that habit. One of the reasons I got my own table was to keep from being exposed to the cigarette smoke. When my friends come over the ones that smoke go outside for a cigarette.

The only single drawback to my playing used to be the think cloud of smoke that would choke a chicken.

Thank goodness NJ bars went smoke free.

I concur. I live in NH during the week. I have a pool room about 3 miles from me, but I drive 20+ minutes away to MA to be in a smoke-free environment to play. I also drive by a nicer room in Nashua then the one I play at, but the smoke-free environment is such a plus I'll live with the problems with the tables where I go.

Quit in '69 or was it '70. A long time ago anyway.

I would smoke only when I played pool or was in the poolroom or bar. Didn't smoke any other time (sort of funny habit). Quit several years ago - it was making me sick.

I have smoked maybe 20 cigars in my lifetime. I won't do it in public. I won't be doing it anymore and it is all because it is bad for me and it just plain stinks This was dumbest habit (for me) to ever even thinking of starting.

The one place I hate smoking more than any is in the pool hall. Sorry to my smoking friends, but it is a bother to me. Although, it does not keep me from going all together. I do still go, but it does come into play and keep me from going at times. This is one of the big reasons for having a table at home.

And personnally I can't wait until Georgia legislators get the balls to ban all smoking in public places of business, they have implemented various "no teeth" attempts to both promote some kind of law while also not upsetting voters ! this does not work you either are for it or for a healthy environment for the populace!

Smoking bans are ridiculous....the government should keep their noses outta business owners business. If bar A allows smoking, and you can't handle it...go to bar B that is smoke free. But, by all means, let the business owners decide. What's next? The government telling restaurants what they can or can't serve as food? Oh, wait, that's happening too...trans-fat. You have every right to not go into any business that either allows smoking or serves food that'll eventually kill you. What's wrong with that? Do you really need the government to step in?

BTW, I too don't like coming home after league smelling like smoke, but I still play because it is MY choice to...I don't HAVE to. And, I'm sure this will shock some, but I am a non-smoker. Give the government an inch, and they'll take a mile. Would it be better if nobody smoked, or ate fatty foods, or actually got off the couch and exercised a little???? Sure!! Should the government have a part in it? NOPE! I'll quit with the rant now, but I couldn't help myself.
