You suck, because?

Because.....

I don't practice enough
I don't practice the right way when I do actually practice
I can't stop my mind from racing, and don't focus properly on the task at hand

Any of a couple thousand more, those just top the list.

Better to ask " what are you good at while shooting pool "

Getting drunk. also makes me absolutely horrible at pool, among many many other things.

I suck because I of my mental game,, can't focus long enough thru a match or for a tournament lasting hours, hell, I can't even remember last week!

Because I lose concentration and break my preshot routine causing misses and poor position.

Edit to add: Great thread idea!

I suck because I think i can always get out instead of playing safe. I can have all of my balls tied up (8 ball) and somehow think I am gong to back cut-5 rail bank in the first ball while managing to break out my 6 other trouble balls while getting shape on the next shot that I can not even see yet because its still tied up to finish the run. Imagine my surprise when it does not work out exactly like I saw it in my minds eye.

I disregard my pre-shot routine after I make a couple of balls. I start a run with pre-shot religion. But after making a few balls I speed up my pace and just assume I'll make the next shot without my PSR. Bites me in the @ss every time.

I suck because my shooting depends upon my wife's mood. When I go to play and she is pissed that I am not spending time with her my game is way off.
I should change my screen name here to pussywhipped.

Well I have lots of reasons like,
1. Visual perception error
2. Arthritis in wrists and thumbs

But the real reason is, I spend way to much time riding motorcycles.

I don't suck.
I'm 67 years old and play once a week.
I can still run 2 or 3 or more racks of most games that use 6 pockets.

it's god given natural ability. You have it or you don't. If you don't you will suck forever.
Dvds, books or lessons wont give it to you.

Sorry if this is a harsh post. But that's how I see it.
There is no magic fix to this relatively simple game. You get it or you don't.

Hmmm...Introspection sometimes hurts my feelings.

I think my biggest problem is getting "good" shape. I know just enough about position play to be dangerous to myself. I ALWAYS seem to get "half ball hooked" where I had the right idea and if I hadn't just bumped that one ball I thought I was clear of, or come off the rail at just a hair of a different angle (like I thought I was going to), I would have been perfect.

And I am SO open to any suggestions some of you better players have for me or what others have done when in my position to get over the proverbial hump.

In my opinion I am not sure about the God given talent. What were the pressures on human evolution that would cause the human race to evolve a superior game of pool? As long as one has good eyesight and hand/eye coordination I believe pool is something that can be taught rather than be in need of born talent to succeed at. I suppose there could have been pool hustlers a couple million years ago but anthropologists have yet to discover any billiard equipment from the dawn of man, you would think at least the slate from the tables would hold up over time.

Remember, i suck, too, so take this lightly..

Getting hooked ends your run. Get good enough shape. Even if it's not as easy, it's better than nothing. Eventually your shooting and leaves should improve and it won't be as big a problem.

I agree with The M. Seen too many people go nowhere, with little chance of improving much more, while others take to it naturally. Nothing wrong with that as long as it's done for enjoyment. Kinda like math.. some get it, some don't and some can be taught.

I don't suck, but I am not as good as I could be because I was never willing to make the sacrifices necessary. I chose my family, friends, and career over pool.

When I was about 12 I used to go to the American Legion every day and play pool all afternoon instead of hanging out with my friends. I drifted apart from a few of my friends and I regretted it then and vowed I would never put pool ahead of my friends or family again.
