Your best thrift store, garage sale, or pawn shop billiard find

I Bought a Harvey Martin plain Jane for 1 dollar at an estate sale. Gave it to my friend Skier Lawyer for his collection.

I think there is another thread on this subject, but here is my list.

Goodwill:
Ebony dufferin
Brunswick butterfly

Craigslist:
Tim Scruggs sneaky
Nice unknown Olive wood and maple cue
Adams JR 9
One piece custom birdseye cue
Ivory joint Coker

There's probably a few I've missed, but all these were bought at very reasonable prices.

Not much of anything Pool related. In a city where players use Cue Tecs etc, thats about all you will find at a pawn shop. Old Duffs and Cue Tecs.

Altho, I lost my first cue in a B&E. A cheap Dufferin in a 20 dollar box case.

I did find a brand new Earl Strickland Cue Tec along with a Scorpion in a decent 2x2 case. Under a $100.

I was happy with that for some time until I found this place and the wonderful world of buying cues as well as customs.

I'm no worse for the wear on that one. Just that I have more cues than I can play with now.

However, my Father found 2 old, but brand new CPR, (Canadian Pacific rail road), lamps at a yard sale for almost nothing.

Still had the lighting and care instructions in them.

There was a guy that was rebuilding some train cars in British Columbia, close to where they drove the Last Spike at Craigellachie, BC in the rail road. Where the West met the east.

I had his address and was going to donate them. My PC blew up the hard drive and I lost contact.

Other than that, I found a couple of wooden carved duck decoys, small ones and an Elephant.

I tend to be a Hoarder at times and don't have enuff room any longer. J/K, but getting close.

But yeah, I love yard sales in the summer.

My wife is the bargain hunter in the family. Her most recent finds are: New set of Super Aramith Balls unused in a box for $15.00. A couple of Moochie's over the years for $5 and $10 respectively. She also found some artwork and cue cases. Its fun to find pool related stuff that everyone else passes over and only you know what the true worth is. I did blow a great deal myself when a guy had a Martin Cue and wanted $500 for it and I held out and when I came back it was gone. So much for me trying to get the guy down in price when I just should have bought it then and there full price.

Found a super nice 6 point Olney at a local EasyPawn... Cocobolo and tiger maple southwest style... $99.00! Couldn't get my wallet out fast enough.

My best deal I got was also my most recent. Mike Yingling, a local cue make, bought a lot of 12 house cues from West Coast Billiards when they were selling everything off as they went out of business. These house cues are clearly unlike anything I have ever seen in any house cue in the last thirty years or so. Don't even know what kind of wood the splice into maple is.... Perhaps palm.... Very fibrous and highly figured.
Mike converted all 12 to sneaky petes with hoppe rings. Most of them didn't get weight bolts and were fitted.with piloted Schon joints with no collars.... True sneaky petes. I had heard that thee sticks were intended to be sold for something north of 200. Got mine after Yingling left for parts-unknown for 95 bucks. It's about 17 ounces and is fitted with a very nice triangle tip. I really like the feel and hit.

I picked up some CDs and a couple DVD movies including "The Hustler" (pool related?) last week for $2 each. One of the CDs is a Japan version and might be worth over $500 according to a recent sale on eBay.

I don't go around yardsales or pawnshops but I did get a Joss Limited cue back in the early 90's for about 1/2 of it's price. The Boston Billiards by Fenway had some cues in the case, a plain Joss for $190 and the Limited, also marked at $190. There is a re-issue of that cue that Joss did recently that they priced at $550.

That Joss Limited was my only cue for over a decade and was only sold recently to pay for my son's Nationals trip.

I picked up a Palmer model 11 for $10.00.

Beautiful 4 point birdseye maple with some sort of pink gem inlays Falcon. $15. Ended up not liking the balance and traded it str8up for a Lucasi Custom Cocobolo with leather wrap.

From Craigslist. My pristine GCI, matching Brunswick double sided floor standing cue rack filled with 11 Brunswick 1 piece cues and 1 Hoppe Titlist, rack, Centennials, table brush in the original box from the original purchase of this GCI (it was in a private residence its whole life, bought new from a Brunswick dealer, delivered to new owners home, only recovered once) all for less than I paid for my last Hoppe Titlist. $300 for table and accessories.

Craigslist:
Gold Crown IV with Sardo Rack and two sets of Aramith balls. $425 and they delivered (already had it in a truck, offered them $25 to bring it to my house to unload).

I picked up a few Huebler's for not too much from one of my favorite honey holes.
Just picked this one up for $4. Maybe a cheap knockoff, but rolls straight and hits great!

Wow, I have never had any type of luck like you guys when scouring Pawn Shops for amazing Pool & Billiard finds; however, back in the day, there was one time I was in a Pawn Shop and picked-up the top-heavy divorcee' who was in-charge of the jewelry display cases. That was a fun summer. - GJ
