YOUR CUES

I regret selling my Huebler the most. Loved that cue and sold it at a discount to a very good player “friend” who needed a cue. He then flipped it for a profit...twice. He happened across it in a pawn shop about a year after he sold it the first time and bought it back for what I sold it to him for, then flipped it again for a profit. Then felt the need to tell me of his good fortune.

Owned right now: Tim Scruggs full splice, Troy Downey- Gabe Ownen series cue, Scott Gracio fancy box cue, Robert Drzuricky, Mike Capone Hoppe Style, Richard Black Split Diamond, Third Catalog Palmer Model 12 Limited, Gilbert Jump/Break Extendable limited cue, McDermott D-11, AH Huebler, Butterfly Dufferin. Cues are from 1974 to 2012, every one is 90% or better, - my favorite player: Richard Black Split Diamond

Other cues in my family- Meucci Oldies 95-17 and 95-19, other vintage Meucci, Adam, and Mali cues - all 90% or better condition.

Several custom cases including vintage Palmer Deluxe case and very rare Brunswick- Lord Brunswick case in mint condition.

I think all of these cues play well, each has unique characteristics for playability. I think that I most regret selling a Skip Weston that I owned 2003. I have owned about 50 custom cues from various makers - never will stop enjoying the workmanship and playability.

Favorite cue maker: my friend, Gary Hay, maker of Haysticks. He taught the guy that started Viking how to make cues, played Willie Mosconi once in an exhibition match and has been making cues for about 60 years, with all of his business coming through referrals.

Favorite cues: custom break/jump cue with quick detach butt section, Cocobolo merry widow butt with black Irish linen wrap, purple heart shaft, titanium ferrule, Samsara break/jump tip. Custom shooting cue, Kingwood merry widow butt with black Irish linen wrap, maple shaft with brass ferrule, currently wearing a Cuetec 15k Cynergy 12.5mm with Moori clear base medium tip. Both cues made by Gary.

Other cues I own: Lucasi short 2 piece jump cue with G10 tip, Schmelke purple heart sneaky Pete. Brunswick 2 piece cue with linen wrap and nice teak-ish looking wood butt piece, maple looking shaft, nothing fancy but it works. No name 2 piece cue made in Tawian, metal/metal joint, butt is very dark wood, maple looking shaft, light grey linen wrap, ivory ferrule and butt end piece, bought new for $89, probably in the early 80s. Has a tiger on the ivory butt piece, used this cue for about 25 years and won many a game with it.

I don't regret purchasing any of them and have not sold any cues.

I don't have any cues on my wish list and don't dislike any brand or cue maker.

Because I like the grain and character of nice wood I have never desired a cue with ornamentation; inlays, points, etc. It is a tool and the fancy stuff doesn't make it work any better, at least for me.

Up until the point that I bought the 'tiger' cue I only used bar cues. I would just pick out the one with the best tip, and without dings in the shaft - if there was one on the rack, roll it across the table to find the up/down orientation of the warpage and use the weight stamp as the index. And then proceed to win, but I got to where I wanted the consistency that would only happen with owning a cue.

I probably would have been fine with off the shelf cues but I bought the custom cues because we are lucky enough to have a local cue maker in our small community that is also a pool shooting friend of mine. Since he has a machinist background he also fabricated some of the machinery he uses to build cues. Just about all of the stronger shooters around here have at least one of his cues, all made to order. At about 80 years old his cue making days are mostly over but he still does tip replacement and repairs on cues he has made.

One of his favorite things to do is to go into a bar, grab a bar stick and proceed to whup ass on anyone with the temerity to challenge an old timer. So once in a while, we walk into a bar without our weapons and see if there is anyone to school, just for the fun of it.

-I have owned only a single Falcon (>20yrs) and added a predator shaft shortly after purchase..
-The same Falcon...
-Never parted with that damn falcon. Doubt I ever will...
-I'm really tempted to pick a Mezz. May even go as far as an Exceed if I decide to tempt the wrath of my wife...lol
-I'd never knock a cue that I haven't put real time on, so no, nothing I dislike

Without going into all my cases and looking, I am not sure how many cues I have now.

Off the top of my head, here are a few:

- A. E. Schmidt custom with full-splice Titlist blank. Had made in May 1973. 3 shafts.
- McDermott C-14 bought new in 1985. 2 shafts.
- Mike Pancerny custom with full-splice Titlist blank. Had made a few years back. 2 shafts (1 from Predator 314-2 FAT blank)
- John Chaplin (Coos Cues) custom Merry Widow. Had made this year. 3 shafts.
- Two Jackpot cues with 7 shafts.
- Players Sneaky Pete.
- Cheap Cuetec.
- Mike Gulyassy custom PHX Merry Widow.
- Murray Tucker Sneaky Pete. One of the first five cues he ever made. 2 Shafts.
- CJ Wiley’s RS-11 McDermott that he used to win the Million Dollar Challenge Tournament in 1996. 2 shafts.
- Becue. Carbon fiber butt and 3 carbon fiber shafts.

I had Richard Black make me an ebony 4-point back in 1978 and it was one of my best playing cues. I had him make me Merry Widow in 1981 and I sold the first one without really playing with the second one. Big mistake that I regret. The first cue played 100 times better. I sold the second cue when I started playing with the McDermott C-14. It played way better, too.

I've owned a lot of cues. Amonst the known cues are Huebler, several Meucci Originals & Sneaky Petes, Mali's, Vikings, several McD's, D and E series, (E's play as well as D's), 3 Schmelkes, Schon, Josey, Gilbert J/B, Pechauer.
I've never owned a Joss, (no particular reason), and while the Josey, Pech and Gilbert were fantastic, one cue stands out.
My RICK HOWARD is by far the best player I've ever handled.

how would you answer your own questions?

I have a McDermott that I use. It's nothing fancy but I like it 🙂 it's got a beautiful woodgrain and black leather wrap. I also have an old vintage Viking with rainbow pearl rings around the butt! 🌈
