People spelling 'grammar' wrong when posting about spelling or grammar police peeves:)

People using a comma before the word 'and' in a sentence complaining about grammar or spelling.

Bastardised spelling of words like 'Americanised', 'favourite' and 'centre':)

The most annoying element for me is a thread with a bunch of CueTable diagrams in it...Just brings my puter to a stop while they load. Straight Pool Forum has a few threads that are hard to read because of this
Larger than screen size pics can be annoying at times also. Ill mannered posters with keyboards on steroids. If you wouldn't say it in person why do it here:confused:

If you download the latest version of Shockwave Player you won't have that problem. The Cue Table is IMO, the best thing ever developed for pool players.

My pet peeve is guys that have Judge Judy as their avatar.

the basic spelling and grammar errors like your, you're, there, their etc.

some people posting in all capitals just to be awkward...

people being weak and apologising for their opinion - whenever something even slightly controversial is said they have to stick a 'IMO' or 'my two cents' on the end.

although to be fair, these are general forum peeves and not specific to az. :D

WHY IS IT ASSUMED THAT USING "IMO" AND MY 2 CENTS IS CONSIDERED BEING WEAK????

IMO (YOUR)...ER I MEAN YOU ARE CONFUSING WEAKNESS WITH SOMEONE THAT WOULD JUST RATHER NOT WASTE (THERE) TIME IN A POINTLESS ON LINE ARGUMENT.....USUALLY OVER SEMANTICS...

I THINK THERE ARE MANY MORE THAT "DO" GET IN CONFRONTATIONS "ONLINE" JUST BECAUSE THEY KNOW THEY WILL NEVER HAVE TO SEE THAT PERSON IN REAL LIFE AND RUN LITTLE TO NO RISK OF GETTING A CUE SHOVED UP THIER ASS...

THAT SAME PERSON IN REAL LIFE IS NOT NEAR AS CONFRONTATIONAL (AS THEY WOULD BE ONLINE)

WLL....THAT IS JUST MY 2 CENTS ANYWAY.....;)

Actually, 'centre' is the correct English (British) spelling of 'center' -- and I think they would know how to write their own language, (while I fail to find the word 'bastardised' that you choose to use ;^)

In many cases, to use a comma before 'and' is completely correct -- for example in this sentence:
John Lee Hooker's songs were covered by Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Van Morrison, The Doors, The Animals, and dozens of other artists.

While there shouldn't be any comma in this sentence (since Eric was part of The Animals):
John Lee Hooker's songs were covered by Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Van Morrison, The Doors, Eric Burdon and The Animals.

I guess the only reason why I know stuff like this is that I'm a foreigner and was forced to learn a second language in school... (well, perhaps our school system was slightly better too ;^)

By the way, if any of you want to know more about writing English, I highly recommend a tiny book called "The Elements of Style" by Strunk & White.

Your sentence above is technically incorrect since it lacks "and" before "Eric Burdon and the Animals", the last group of your list. Only telegraphic style (common in scientific presentation, which you're not doing here) would allow absence of articles and conjunctions, IMO.

I'm afraid you are wrong. A more simple example:

Pool cues, apples, and hot chicks.

But:

Pool cues, apples and oranges.

Since apples and oranges are related, there should be no comma before 'and'.

I was not saying your lack of a comma was wrong. It was your lack of "and" before the last item in your series.

So you say it should be:

Pool cues, and apples and oranges.

Nope, that's not correct.

Sorry Peer, I'm positive of this (I've quoted the following exactly):

From the Chicago Manual of Style, page 245, section 6.19:

"If the last element consists of a pair joined by and, the pair should still be preceded by a serial comma and the first and (see the examples below.):

She took a photograph of her parents, the president, and the vice president.

The meal consisted of soup, salad, and macaroni and cheese.

John was working, Jean was resting, and Alan was running errands and furnishing food."

Beetle -- I really appreciate people who can/will engage in an issue like this, and also quote the page and paragraphs of the referred material (i.e. the Chicago Manual of Style). Hence, I wish I was as lucky with my reference, but unfortunately the Strunk & White book has no index (no kiddin'), so either I have to trust your silly Chicago manual or I have to look through the entire Strunkee book... hence, I'm more than happy to concede... for now. (Still, I bet the Chicago Manual eats Strunk & White's poop ;^)

Love, peace, and understanding.
(or should it be; Love, peace and understanding..?!)

Thanks, I harbour [note british spelling] no ill feelings. It may well be that your guide suggests a different approach. Unfortunately these style guides do change over time...

The rules about the use of the serial comma and the conjunction "and" apply to a series, where a series is defined by three or more terms (since 'apples and oranges' is one term here this is not a series).

It is a common practice among journalists to omit the final comma in a series (e.g., see the Associated Press Stylebook), but otherwise authorities favor the use of the final comma in a series.

Dammit

I'VE SPENT ABOUT A WEEK GIVING THIS THREAD SOME SERIOUS THOUGHT AND I'VE DECIDED THAT MY BIGGEST 'PEEVE' IS THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE THAT FEEL THE NEED TO INSERT SOME SORT OF joke (or one-liner) REPLY INTO SERIOUS THREADS..... imo
