Zircote

I am having a cue made by a local cuemaker (he is pretty well known and respected). Anyhow - I wanted a brown wood with brown veneer scheme and suggested rosewood. He responded he had a piece of zircote that he thought would be really nice looking. Do any of the cuemakers on here have experience or finished pics of zircote?

Chris

BTW - I think this may be his first time with Zircote (I am not sure).

Here are some pics of one of mine...but they don't show the wood figure too well.

I will have to look. That wood plays great. I really like the pieces with black streaks all over the place.

wow

that is a pretty piece of wood Mr. Varney. I appreciate you posting that for me. Doesnt seem to be a wood often used in cues (at least from my searches). I wonder why?

It's nasty wood to work with. Turns to dirty dust when it's cut. Even smells like dirt when cutting it. The landscape figured stuff is pretty but in my experiences with it a lot of times when turned round it loses some of that figured luster.

ziricote

If you go to my website below, there are a couple ziricote cues in the sold gallery. They can be striking when paired with a high contrasting handle material. I am quite fond of the ziricote and python handle cue.

I have used ziricote a few times and I like the way the wood hits. Pretty solid. Seldom used for cues though but play a little bit like ebony or the harder rosewoods. It smells funny though.

It would make an excellent playing cue so go ahead! just my 2 cents

I'm no cuemaker but I do have one with zircote wood...and quite beautifully figured...hope it helps giving you an idea...

Yuri, that is one beautiful example of Zircote. I must admit it blows away many rosewoods. BUT I still hate turning it. I never made a bigger mess in my shop than on days when I when I cut Zircote! It is like sneezing powder in stick form, cannot blow that dust out of my workclothes either.

I whole heartedly agree. I no longer use it.

I agree. Ziricote produces very fine dust when it's cut similar to bocote. My air filter usually turns dark brown very quickly when turning just a few pieces of these woods. I think the wood plays good but you need a decent air filtration system to work with ziricote.

I agree it's very similar to bocote. Another wood that I find similar to this when cutting is Lignum Vitae. Very dense wood. Ziricote, bocote and lignum give me an upset stomach when I cut them:(
