    Short Rack

I sometimes play in a Senior's Snooker League that will go to a ten ball rack if they have too many players and not enough time to play full 15 ball racks. I've also seen three ball racks played for the same reason - that being said, I've never seen a three ball rack used during league play.

Question about the main butt of snooker cue

Well, I suppose if you were building, for example, a bridge, then pyramids (or triangles) would add a lot of structural strength. But, my understanding is, the butt is designed to counter balance the shaft, not add structural strength. Two splice cues (aka a butterfly splice) are generally...

    Laminated tip on snooker cue?

I've been using Talisman laminated tips for about 4 years - no complaints at all.

Question about the main butt of snooker cue

Either 2 or 4 splices. This page at Mastercraft cues has a picture of the first two ebony splices being glued to the shaft. More pictures of the cue-making process on John Parris Cues website - see "in the workshop".

Difference of old and new snooker tables

In keep with the thread, there are two Brunswick Monarch tables (circa 1900's) out of the six tables that are used in the league that I play in. They're sweet tables to play on. Well that's me jealous, Slasher. Where do you play if you're not at home? Hey, there's a No-handicap...

Difference of old and new snooker tables

From the Snooker Heritage site that Slasher posted a link to: "Burroughes & Watts were more active in the provinces than any other London maker, and in 1876 they established the Scottish Professional Billiards Championship, providing a silver challenge cup. Walter Buttery became a partner in...

Difference of old and new snooker tables

How about the best of both worlds: a nice 100 year-old table with brand new tournament cloth.

    Sighting techniques Snooker vs pool

I’d say that the standard aiming system in snooker is broken down into five shots: full ball, ¾ ball, ½ ball, ¼ ball, fine cut. One can go a step further and say that a shot between, for instance, full ball and ¾ ball would be a “thick” ¾ ball. I’ve never played that way, but that’s the way the...

    Snooker Cues

Speaking in generalities, the answer would be yes, snooker cues for snooker, pool cues for pool. It’s all about tip size, so the smaller the cue ball, the smaller the cue tip. I’ve had an English cuemaker describe the taper on his cues as “cigar-shaped”. So, yes, the shaft would be “beefier”...

    Do UK snooker leagues exist?

I play league snooker in Canada - we've just changed to a handicap system that seems to be working very well.

    How to clean cues?

I guess it would depend on what kind of finish is on the shaft/butt of the cue.

Need some help buying a cue...

Hi Norm, I play League Snooker with around 40 other guys - there are around 5 or 6 of them that have one of those Dark Horse cues. I've never heard a complaint from any of them about the cues. It's pretty easy to say they're Chinese crap, but the ones I've seen have very nice ash shafts with a...

Can snooker be played with an LD shaft???

Actually, as each coat of oil was absorbed into the wood, it seemed to loosen the dirt that was right into the grain of the wood. By the end of the process the cloth(s) I was using came away clean. There was some residual dirt that I ended up using alcohol to remove. I know that's probably a...

Can snooker be played with an LD shaft???

Sorry for the delay in responding... No, it’s not the cue I bought, but I did find that listing when I was researching David White cues later on. The cue you’re talking about closed at £287, were you prepared to go that high? I bought my cue locally from one of the people that plays in the...
