Machinists' Level

Hi,

Just curious when you guys (Mechanic) level a table would you use a machinists level (link below) or is this to sensitive? If not what is recommended?

I'm just going to mention, you can also buy these used on ebay. I got mine for about a quarter of what they cost new. Mine was dead nuts when I got it but you can calibrate them with a square.

It could make sense to buy a new one if you were in the business of table installation but if you're only going to use it a few times a year used can be an option.

Energy transfer from cuetip to whiteball

I think it’s more than just the speed of the tip when making contact. If you take it from one extreme to the other it makes a big difference in energy transfer. Example:
If what’s behind the tip is a feather vs a steel rod and the tip speed is the same at CB contact the feather will collapse on contact and not transfer much energy to CB whereas the steel rod will not collapse
If there’s a difference in extreme to extreme there has to be a difference at all points in between although it be minuscule .

Yeah, great... If you ever play pool with a feather or a steel rod.

Energy transfer from cuetip to whiteball

When the tip hits the cue ball your arm/hand/grip have no effect - the hand's skin gives too much. So the stick's weight and speed are the only things that matter - and, at the same speed, they're the same with a "fast" or "powerful" stroke.

How you stroke may affect your consistency/accuracy, but it doesn't change how contact at the same speed works.

Abstract​

When one object collides with another, the collision results in a loss of kinetic energy. The energy loss occurs mainly in the small volume of material that is compressed in the vicinity of the contact point. The effect was examined using a billiard cue with different tips. The resulting ball speed was found to vary strongly with the type of tip used, indicating that a large fraction of the energy loss occurred in the tip rather than the cue itself. The player’s hand alters both the effective mass of the cue and the coefficient of restitution.
